Kochi, December 30, 2023: A life-changing bariatric surgery at Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly, led to a weight loss of 57 kg for a 38-year-old man, who initially weighed 182 kg. A native of Vypin, Josemon underwent a two-hour procedure called laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, performed by a medical team led by Dr. Manoj Ayyappath, Senior Surgical Gastroenterologist. Within two months following the surgery, Josemon lost 57 kg, enabling him to return to a normal and healthy life.
Following the surgery, he was freed from severe obesity-related challenges such as walking difficulties, snoring, and respiratory issues. The patient is expected to lose an additional 30 to 40 kilograms over the next six months. During the surgery, the patient's respiration ceased before anesthesia could be administered. However, the patient was successfully revived, ensuring that the procedure proceeded without additional complications.
A significant portion of the stomach was removed through the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure, reducing its capacity to 100mL. This reduction subsequently diminishes appetite, leading to a decrease in the body mass index (BMI). Additionally, the hormonal changes resulting from the surgery further contribute to weight reduction and aid in maintaining normal blood sugar levels. As a result, the patient can lead a normal life. Dr. Sheyon, Senior Registrar, Surgical Gastroenterology, and Dr. Dinit Joy, Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Anesthesia, were also part of the surgical team.
"Bariatric surgery at the age of 38 for a person with a BMI of 66 is rare. The decision to perform the procedure on Josemon was motivated by the desire to restore him to a normal life, especially when his condition was significantly impacting his daily activities. Compared to the risks associated with obesity, such as diabetes, hypertension, or premature death, the risks of bariatric surgery are minimal," stated Dr. Manoj Ayyappath.
“This journey towards transformative health and well-being is truly remarkable. We acknowledge the significance of raising awareness about bariatric surgery as a potential solution for individuals dealing with obesity-related health challenges. Apollo Adlux Hospital has commenced performing robotic bariatric surgeries, which offer significant advantages over traditional procedures. Apart from providing better precision and fewer complications, robotic surgeries also minimize the risk of injuring the enlarged internal organs of these patients,” stated B. Sudharshan, CEO of Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly.
