EW DELHI, 2 December 2023 – UNICEF Celebrity Supporter and three-time Grammy-award winning musician Ricky Kej released his new animated song video ‘LiFE’ to promote climate actions and motivate individuals to take action to mitigate the climate crisis through commitments and actions, at a concert held here today.
The LiFE song was released in the presence of Mr Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator in India, Biren Ghose, Country Head, Technicolor India, R.K. Chand, Managing Director, The Mill and Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative.
The ‘LiFE’ song, composed by Ricky Kej, was released to coincide with the COP28 – the international Climate Summit being held in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December. The song is inspired by Indian Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi’s ‘LiFE’ campaign that seeks to transform people’s behaviours into pro-planet by adopting sustainable lifestyles. Mission LiFE was launched by the Prime Minister at COP26 to encourage individual and collective action towards ‘Lifestyle for Environment.’
UNICEF and its public-private-youth partnerships platform YuWaah (known as Generation Unlimited globally), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, is advocating for promoting children and youth voices on climate action at the global stage. Four Youth Climate Champions from India, selected from over 130 youth participants from 21 states at the India chapter of Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) are participating in the ‘Youth actions on LiFE’ session on 8 December at the India Pavilion at COP28. These Youth Climate Champions, being supported by UNICEF will also present India’s National Youth statement on climate change at COP28.
UNICEF is collaborating with over 100 child and youth climate activists at COP28, particularly from countries most affected by the climate crisis.
Speaking at the launch of the LiFE song concert, UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCaffrey said,“Music is a powerful medium for communicating and bringing people together. UNICEF is happy to partner with Ricky Kej on the launch of the LiFE Song. Climate change has profound implications for children and UNICEF advocates that together we all can catalyse positive change – for and with children. Ricky’s LiFE song is a vibrant call to action for collective impact through individual actions, with children and young people as active partners and changemakers.”
The ‘LiFE’ song composed by Ricky Kej features some of the top national and international artists ranging from Shankar Mahadevan, Salim-Sulaiman, American Grammy Award Winner Lonnie Park, Indo-Canadian sensation Abby V and a 70-piece orchestra of the New York Youth Symphony. It is accompanied by an animation video created in India by Technicolor, an acclaimed creative studio, featuring individual climate action with children as change makers.
Speaking at the concert, the UNICEF India Celebrity Supporter, Ricky Kej, environmentalist, and musician known for creating socially conscious music, said, “Children are the least responsible for climate change, yet they will bear the greatest burden of its impact. In the creation of ‘LiFE’ song we sought to highlight the inherent injustice of their predicament and amplify their voices as powerful agents of change. It is a call to action, an anthem for the generations that will navigate the consequences of our collective choices. Let us recognize the power of children as catalysts for transformation and unite in safeguarding the world we pass on to them.”
The song will also be released in multiple languages including French, Spanish, Italian, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi and Arabic early next year to support Mission LiFE globally.
