Bridging the communication gap for senior citizens, Journey of Generations (JOG) has completed its seventh successful cohort
The programme was initiated to enhance interactions between senior citizens and residents with volunteers from the younger generation in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, Tuesday 28 February 2023: Journey of Generations, initiated by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an and organized by volunteers from the community, concluded its seventh cohort, celebrating with a walk-through Um Al Emarat park. The walk was joined by His Excellency Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi and H.E. Salama Al Ameemi, Director General of Ma’an.
Journey of Generations reflects the directives of the UAE leadership regarding senior citizens and residents, and the importance of building bridges of communication between them and the wider community. Ma'an is committed to integrating and supporting all of Abu Dhabi's residents including Seniors and creating a positive difference to community members, recognising the contribution in kind from the private sector to make the programme a success.
Journey of Generations program attracted since its inception more than 600 volunteers and 450 senior citizen and residents, the most recent edition of the program was hugely successful, seeing more than 125 senior citizens reaping the benefits of meeting 141 volunteers over six weeks, across six locations: Al Jubail Island, Al Jazira club, Rotana Hotel Al Saadiyat, Green House Al Samha, Al Wathba Fossil Dunes and finishing off at Umm Al Emarat park.
The purpose of the meetups is to bring together people across all age groups, nurture kinship, and encourage the passing on of knowledge, experience, and wisdom between the elderly and younger groups.
The program has given an opportunity to members from the community to lead an impactful program that serves a special segment of the community, the senior citizens and residents. A group of volunteers have taken initiative to organize the program and work with private sector organizations to host the walks and receive contributions that can enhance the experience of the seniors.
Ma’an is a social impact one-stop-shop that provides the resources and support networks to help government entities, the private sector and social service groups to sustainably raise and allocate funds for community-focused organisations and social initiatives. The Authority’s introduction of outcomes-based contracting to address social challenges is designed to lead to a cultural shift in Abu Dhabi by promoting community engagement and volunteering to bring people of all ages together.
H.E. Salama Al Ameemi, Director General of Ma’an, said: “Aligning with our wider goals to foster a culture of collaborative social responsibility and genuine social impact, Journey of Generations addresses the communication gap that exists between a set of residents who are often vulnerable, and looks to create a culture of active participation in the community. The programme aligns with our values at Ma’an to generate positive change and enable volunteers to take personal responsibility for the part they can play in. Journey of Generations has expanded its reach and is conducted in Al Ain, Al Rowais and Dhafra.”
Key groups that the Community Engagement Program aims to support include people of determination, seniors, children, women, and vulnerable groups.
