Every year on February 21st, people all over the world observe International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as multilingualism. It all started with Bangladesh's effort to preserve and safeguard its native language Bangla.
The 21st of February, that is, Ekushey February, commemorates the day in 1952 when a group of University of Dhaka students organised a nationwide protest to oppose the use of Urdu as the country's official language in favour of Bangla. After years of opposition from the language movement, Pakistan's government finally caved in 1956 and recognised Bangla as an official language. Prior to 1999, February 21 was observed as National Martyrs' Day. Following that, in 1999, UNESCO declared it International Mother Language Day, and in 2002, the UN General Assembly officially recognised International Mother Language Day (IMLD).
