AUDIENCE ENJOYS THE PLAY ‘URUBHANGAM’ BASED ON MAHABHARATA AT JKK

AUDIENCE ENJOYS THE PLAY ‘URUBHANGAM’ BASED ON MAHABHARATA AT JKK

Jaipur, 21 May: The play ‘Urubhangam’ was staged by Rang Sadhana Theatre Group, Jaipur in Rangayan at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) today. The Sanskrit play was written by the Mahakavi Bhasa between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD and was based on the famous epic Mahabharata. The play was directed by Vivek Mathur and music direction was done by Pratish Rawat and Kunal Sharma.

The ‘Urubhangam’ episode is based on the character of Duryodhana during and after the war between Bhima and Duryodhana. It was shown in the play that Duryodhana was superior to Bhima in the mace battle. During the war between the two, when Bhima was failing to defeat Duryodhana, then as per the orders of Shri Krishna, he stabbed Duryodhana's thigh and injured him. Due to this episode, Guru Balarama got angry with Bhima. At the same time, Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, Durjaya and Ashwatthama also get upset and sad seeing Duryodhana in this condition. Then, Duryodhana said that he was enjoying the fruits of his misdeeds, so all of them should forgive the Pandavas by giving up on their anger. He also told Durjaya to respect the Pandavas as much as he respected them. At the end of the play, Duryodhana died while invoking his ancestors.

The central screenplay of this play was the same as in the original Mahabharata. But Bhas changed the formulation of the story by changing some perspectives. The most extreme variation in this was that while Duryodhana was depicted as a villain in the Mahabharata, in the drama Urubhangam, he was shown to be more human. Often tragic plays are rare in Sanskrit, but the author's display of Duryodhana's side in the story added a tragic element to this play.

The artistes who performed in the play included— Kamlesh Sayar, Atmaram Sinhal, Surendra Joshi, Bijendra Singh Gurjar, Vivek Parashar, Aditya Chandra Swami, Saraswati, Siddhi Maheshwari. Apart from them, Hemendra Singh Panwar, Paramjit Singh, Ramkesh Meena, Keshav Singh, Shashank Agarwal, Sanskar Rohilla, Himanshu Verma, Sanjay Kumar Sharma were a part of the chorus. Art directors were Vipin Sharma and Sanjay Sharma and lighting was done by Om Prakash Saini. The decoration was done by Aslam Pathan and the clothing was done by Vivek Mathur and Ashish Motwani. Vipin Sharma was also the Stage Manager of the play.
