Releasing their classic silhouettes in famous grey shades of New Balance
Dubai, UAE – 19 May 2022: Grey is inherently simple yet endlessly complex. The human eye can detect hundreds of different grey shades, and although the differences between them may appear minute at first glance, the color can tell a wealth of different stories depending on how it’s applied to a sneaker. ‘Grey is balance. Grey is neutral. Grey is calming, ’says Paul Kaseumsouk, the senior project manager for the Grey Day pack. ‘Grey matters.’
This book of color stories has been at the center of New Balance design practice since the 1980s. Though grey has long been fundamental among New Balance sneakers, it became singular in the 80s thanks to signature models like the 990 and the 574. When the 990 was first released in 1982, its $100 price point and no-expense-spared premium grey suede upper made it an instant status symbol, cementing it as the color of sneaker royalty. Fast forwarding six years to 1988, the 574 brought the hue to the masses. With its affordable price and status as New Balance’s first true ‘lifestyle' sneaker, the 574 became a wardrobe staple without any wild advertising and grew to become the brand’s most iconic silhouette.
The impact and influence of New Balance’s legendary grey shade and the shoes that made it an icon are celebrated every year on March 15th, a day New Balance declared as Grey Day in 2018. New releases are always a key part of each Grey Day, but New Balance have some extra special elements as part of the 2022 release. Focusing on three models, the 57/40, XC-72 and 327, NB’s green leaf standard now applies to select footwear.
Each Grey Day release has been manufactured with more than 50 per cent recycled or organic materials in the upper, leather used supports more responsible manufacturing through the Leather Working Group, and man-made cellulose is also utilized. In addition, at least one midsole or outsole material contains a minimum of 3 per cent bio-based or 5 per cent recycled content.
A lynchpin of their eco-conscious mission moving forward, the brand’s green leaf standard will form part of New Balance’s broader catalog in 2022. ‘Our goal was to evolve Grey Day heading into 2022 with a sustainability expression, ’says Kaseumsouk, ‘It’s inspired by the past but not bound by limitation.”
57/40
Drawing from elements of 80s and 90s fashion while adding conceptual details, the 57/40 is a retro-futuristic update of the classic 574. As the 574 was originally released as a hybrid road/trail design, the silhouette takes that concept and expands on it, combining a slimmer-than-usual last with striking details like a doubled-up midsole and a super-sized midfoot logo. For Grey Day 2022, it’s presented in silvery shades that are contrasted by natural-toned accents, putting each piece of its design on full display.
XC-72
The future that the past envisions isn’t often the one that comes to be, but concept sketches and prototype designs from past decades serve as time capsules of those decades ’view of futurism. The XC-72 takes that ‘past-future ’mindset and brings it to life in full fledged fashion by revamping sketches of 70s concept cars and combining their strikingly angular features with the sleekness and smoothness of the era’s slim running shoes. This is manifested in the XC-72’s chunky outsole and an elongated heel that give off a forceful look. Grey Day’s XC-72 features a wide variety of both light and dark grey shades brought together by black.
327
New Balance’s 327 was created by combining the mindset of a 70s running shoe designer with the advanced tools and processes available to today’s designers. Inspired by old school models like the 320 and the SuperComp, the 327’s trim upper is accented by asymmetric midsoles, wraparound trail outsoles, a forked embellishment on its toebox and an enlarged logo on the quarter. It’s the moodiest pair of the 2022 Grey Day pack, as Kaseumsouk refers to the color application here as ‘a mix of dark tone greys’.
