Jaipur, 19 May: The play ‘Urubhangam’ will be presented by Rang Sadhana Theatre Group, Jaipur on 21 May at 7 pm in Rangayan at Jawahar Kala Kendra. This Sanskrit play has been written by the great poet Bhasa between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD and is based on the famous epic Mahabharata. The play has been directed by Vivek Mathur and music direction has been done by Pratish Rawat and Kunal Sharma. Entry to the play is ticketed.
The central screenplay of this play is the same as in the original Mahabharata. But Bhas has changed the formulation of the story by changing some perspectives. The most extreme variation in this is that while Duryodhana is depicted as a villain in the Mahabharata, in the drama Urubhangam, he is shown to be more human. Often tragic plays are rare in Sanskrit, but the author's display of Duryodhana's side in the story adds a tragic element to this play.
President, Rang Sadhana Theatre Group, Jaipur, Vivek Mathur has been actively working in theatre for the last 12 years. He has contributed under and with many senior directors in Jaipur theatre. He has performed in national theatre festivals as well as directed several plays. Prominent plays among them are ‘Marnopranth’ (Surendra Verma), ‘Panchhi Aise Aate Hai’ (Vijay Tendulkar), ‘Janch Ho Gayi’ (Madan Sharma), ‘Roshni Ki Awaaz’ (Premchand Gandhi) and ‘Footpath ka Samrat'.
