Jaipur, 21 February: The prestigious 16 goal Carysil Jaipur Open for HH Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh tournament will begin from tomorrow. This Tournament will be from 22 February to 27 February. This is for the second consecutive year that a 16-goal tournament is being played in Jaipur. This tournament has been sponsored by Carysil. This trophy was instituted in the year 2012 by the Royal Family of Jaipur in the memory of late HH Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh and since then played regularly in the Jaipur polo season. This was informed by the Chairman and Managing Director, Acrysil Ltd Mr. Chiragh Parekh today at a Press Conference at Rajasthan Polo Club.
Mr. Parekh further added that it is their endeavour to make Jaipur the best destination for polo in the country with participation of international players. It will also be a great opportunity for the spectators of the sport.
On the occasion, Maharaj Narendra Singh said that there will be four teams playing – Sujan Indian Tigers, Sona Polo, Los Polistas Polo and Vimal Airon Achievers. The high handicap polo players participating in the tournament are: Mr. Tomas Fernandez Llorente (+7), Juan Agustin Garcia Grossi (+7), Manuel Fernadez Llorente(+6), Juan Cruz Losada (+6), Chris Mackenzie (+6), Gonzalo Fucci (+5), Lance Watson (+5), HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh (+4), Siddhant Sharma (+4), Abhimanyu Pathak (+4), Col. Ravi Rathore, VSM (Retd.) (+3), Mr. Angad Kalaan (+3), Kuldeep Singh Rathore (+3), Jaisal Singh (+0), Sunjay Kapur (+0), Ashok Chandna (+0).
Hony. Secretary, Rajasthan Polo Cub, Mr. Digvijay Singh said that many young players are also taking up the sport and the passion for polo is also increasing in the city with new grounds coming up as well.
Explaining the concept of open tournament, polo player, Mr. Abhimanyu Pathak highlighted that in this high goal tournament no team will get any advantage points. With high handicap players from abroad participating, the tournament will also play an important role in improving the performance of the Indian players. Both the players as well as polo lovers of the city will get to witness the best level of polo.
About HH Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh and Polo
His Highness Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh or ‘Bubbles’ as he was affectionately known, continued the tradition of polo. As a child he excelled at cycle polo, one of the unique and delightful variants of the game played in Jaipur. Later, during his army career, he was rated one of the finest polo players at the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun, and was a founding member of the Federation of International Polo (FIP). In his later years in Jaipur he promoted the game, inviting many international players and dignitaries to participate and attend, as well as taking the Jaipur team abroad. He played many times with HRH the Prince of Wales (who has visited Jaipur to play polo twice) and with HM the Sultan of Brunei. Spectators have included Jacqueline Kennedy, the late Diana Princess of Wales, the Presidents and Prime Ministers of India and the USSR, amongst many other celebrities, foreign royalty and other dignitaries.
