Jaipur, 12 February: As a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) organised a virtual discussion on 'Rajasthani Theatre - Challenges and Possibilities' in ‘Samvaad Shrinkhla’ on JKK's Facebook page today. During the programme, senior theatre, director and Tamasha Guru, Mr Vasudev Bhatt discussed various aspects of Rajasthani theatre and shared his views. He was in conversation with actor and writer, Mr Naval Kishore Vyas.
Talking about the 250-year-old folk drama style 'Jaipur Tamasha', Mr Bhatt said that his family has been presenting 'Tamasha' in Jaipur for generations. In Rajasthan, different folk plays are performed in different languages, but ‘Jaipur Tamasha’ is in pure Hindi, Khari Boli and pure classical music. Talking about his acting debut in drama, he said that he got interested in acting from films and songs. He acted in several plays on the streets and town halls in Bikaner. After that, he returned to Jaipur and worked in radio. His speech and pronunciation improved a lot while presenting plays on the radio. After which he acted in big plays in many cities and established himself.
Talking about the challenges of theatre, Mr Bhatt said that drama can only be done by those who have the passion and madness for theatre. Despite different avenues of acting today like film, TV and web, those performing drama are doing a great job of keeping theatre alive. He said theatre performed without techniques produces the best drama and actor. There is a lack of discipline among theatre artistes today as compared to the past. He explained that if the play is written and performed in the local language, then the audience’s interest to watch the play will increase. This will lead to the development of theatre and people will love their language. Similarly, the promotion of theatre through workshops and theatres festivals generates public interest in the art.
