Christopher Mellon, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense: Why is the Air Force AWOL on the UAP issue?

Mint Hill, NC:  Christopher Mellon, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, has published an article with The Debrief entitled, “Why is the Air Force AWOL on the UAP Issue?”

High level media takeaways from the article

  • The majority of reporting on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) by our military since 2004 has been logged by the U.S. Navy, according to a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) last June. Notably, in 80 Cases multiple sensor systems simultaneously corroborated the presence of the UAP.
  • The ODNI report stated that UAP, among other things, “clearly pose a safety of flight issue and may pose a challenge to U.S. national security.”
  • The apparent absence of U.S. Air Force (USAF) reporting on UAP incidents raises concerns about its engagement on the UAP issue, and its responsiveness to civilian oversight.
  • The USAF and its component organizations actually detected thousands of UAP. between 2004 and 2021, as Mellon notes in his article.

"Some UAP appeared to remain stationary in winds aloft, move against the wind, maneuver abruptly, or move at considerable speed, without discernible means of propulsion. In a small number of cases, military aircraft systems processed radio frequency (RF) energy associated with UAP sightings," mentions Christopher Mellon, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence.

Mellon presents the following overview of USAF unclassified surveillance capabilities:

  • The Space Fence: “The World’s Most Advanced Radar”.
  • The Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS, formerly BMEWS).
  • The Global Infrasound Acoustic Monitoring Network.
  • The U.S. Space Surveillance Network.
  •  The Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS).
  • Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA radars).
  • The Federal Aviation Administration.

In his focused coverage of the UAP issue and the USAF’s resistance to civilian oversight and transparency, Mellon asks hard questions and strikes at the heart of the most relevant issues, all of which must be addressed in order to advance more responsible dialogue and military action on UAP.
