PINK CITY RESONATES WITH ISHQ, GIRIH AND SUFISM

PINK CITY RESONATES WITH ISHQ, GIRIH AND SUFISM

Jaipur: On Thursday evening, the literati and book lovers of Jaipur were charmed with the various concepts, thoughts and ideas of Sufism such as ‘Ishq’, friendship, spirituality, acceptance, compassion and redemption, among others. The occasion was a talk with the London-based author Moin Mir on his book ‘The Lost Fragrance of Infinity’ organized by the IAS Literary Society, Rajasthan and Young Indians, CII at ITC Rajputana. The author was in conversation with the Literary Secretary of the IAS Association and Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Rajasthan, Mugdha Sinha.

With a young and distraught craftsman from Delhi, Qarrar Ali as the protagonist, the historical novel is set during a time of political instability marked by a fading Mughal Empire, a turbulent Central Asia and Persia, a culturally retreating Ottoman Empire and declining Spanish influence. Qaraar Ali finds hope in the sacred geometry of the Sufis through which he attempts at rebuilding his life and rediscovering love. Throwing light on the various concepts of Sufism and its contributions to humanity, art, mathematics, mysticism and science, the novel also entwines a deeply passionate love story. Talking about why the author chose to write a novel instead of an academic work on Sufism, Moin Mir said: “If I wrote an academic work on Sufism, it would have been confined to academic scholars or someone doing a PhD in Sufism. The multi-layered story and diverse perspectives have given this book a wider reach.”

Talking about the pillars of Sufism that drove him to write the book, Mir said that he was moved by the ideas of unity and ‘ishq’. “Sufism has some 300 layered meanings of love and it was not possible to write about such a subject academically. Love can only be talked about through love”, said the author. The book also uses a plethora of symbols and metaphors to narrate the protagonist’s inward journey. One of the prominent metaphors is ‘Girih’—which means ‘knot’ in Persian. It involves the arrangement of just five tile shapes allowing for infinitely repeating designs in architectural decoration. It is the “infinity” of these tile designs that are alluded to in the book’s title The Lost Fragrance of Infinity.

It is worth noting that Moin Mir is a descendant of Hazrat Maudood Chishti, one of the stalwart founders of the Chishti Sufi order. Mir was born and raised in India and began writing under the influence of his grandfather, a scholar of Sufism. His first book, Surat: Fall of a Port, Rise of a Prince was a journey into his forefather’s quest to reclaim his inheritance of Surat from the British East India Company.
