ECONOMISTS MUST GAUGE THE GROUND REALITY

ECONOMISTS MUST GAUGE THE GROUND REALITY

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Minister of State for Higher Education, Mr. Rajendra Singh Yadav today said that it is the dire need in the country for the economists to understand the ground reality of our villages and the deprived sections of the society. He said it is all very well to organize conferences and seminars in which data and numbers are discussed pertaining to the economic growth of the country. However, it has been observed that sometimes the data can vary from the ground reality. It is important for the economists to focus on reducing poverty and bridging the gap between the haves and the have-nots. The Minister was speaking at the inaugural session of the 103rd and 104th Annual Conference of Indian Economic Association (IEA) at Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ) as the Chief Guest.

The Minister further informed that the present Government in Rajasthan is committed to take higher education to a new level. Today, there are 1800 private colleges, 300 government colleges and 123 more government colleges are in the pipeline.

Chairman, 15th Finance Commission, Mr. NK Singh mooted for a change in the old-world order to a new-world order. He said it was imperative that the organizations like the United Nations, World Bank, IMF etc. need to reform themselves to be able to cater to the new challenges thrown up in recent times. He particularly focused on the United Nations which he said has done precious little in the past two years of the pandemic. It also needs to address issues related to climate control, cyber security, terrorism, poverty and conditions related to pandemic.

The Former President, IEA, Former Chairman, UGC & IC SSR, Chief Editor, IEJ, Prof Sukhadeo Thorat emphasized upon the fact that social inclusive growth was the need of the day. The economists need to work on a strategy whereby the social economic growth will ensure that the poor tend to benefit from the economic development. He also threw light on how in earlier times like the 1950s and 60s what mattered was the per capita income growth. However, it is now pretty clear that economic growth alone will not benefit the deprived but inclusive growth which is now leading to social inclusive growth needs to be focused upon. This alone will ensure equitable growth.

Founder & Chairman, KIIT and KISS, Bhubaneswar, Prof Achyuta Samanta said that the government must focus on education and healthcare. The plight of the daily workers was made pretty apparent during the pandemic when they did not have access to any social security. He also emphasized upon the fact that the economic growth now has to be inclusive as well as equitable. The economists will have to work towards this goal.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor, MUJ, Prof GK Prabhu in his welcome address said that it is a privilege for MUJ to host the 103rd and 104th Annual Conference of the IEA. He added that economics is an extremely important subject for students of all backgrounds and is also a necessary requisite for research.

The Vote of Thanks on the occasion was delivered by Vice President, IEA HOD of Economics, VSSD College, Kanpur, Dr. Devendra Awasthi. The Conference Special Issue of Indian Economic Journal & IEA Membership Profile – 2022 was also released on the occasion by the dignitaries on the dais.
