Many people in India have suffered great losses this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing protests against farm acts the Parliament of India passed in September 2020. Vijender Singh, a famous boxer, is using his platform to support political and philanthropic causes and has collaborated with an up and coming watch brand, Khalsa 1699 Watches, to further his support of those in need.
In 1985 Vijender Singh was born in Kaluwas village, five kilometres from Bhiwani, to a bus driver and homemaker. While in school, Vijender picked up boxing as a hobby, inspired by his brother. Over time, it became clear that boxing was not just an interest or passion for Vijender, but a viable career opportunity.
Vijender trained at the Bhiwani Boxing Club with former national-level boxer Jagdish Singh. At age 12, Singh won the silver medal in the sub-junior nationals and won his first gold medal at the 2000 Nationals just three years later. Vijender has achieved countless titles and medals, including silver medallist at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, silver medallist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, bronze medallist at the 2006 Asian Games and bronze medallist at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In recognition of his success, in 2009 Vijender was named the top-ranked boxer in the International Boxing Association's annual middle-weight category list.
While it is easy to credit Vijender for his success as a boxer, he equally deserves acclaim for his work outside of the ring. Singh was at the forefront of the farmer protests in India and used his influence to stand up for the rights of farmers. Rather than becoming infatuated with celebrity culture, he has used his platform to unite with disadvantaged groups and individuals and support anyone who comes to him and needs help. Vijender has always lived his life with the discipline of not turning his back on someone in need.
The famed boxer now turned politician has recently announced a collaboration with Khalsa 1699 Watches - the world’s first timepiece sporting the Khanda Sahib (Sikh) symbol. The name of the watch was chosen as all who carry the name Singh, such as Vijender himself, are descendants of warriors. Khalsa also has a very rich heritage and historically Khalsa warriors have fought invaders and were known as the warrior saints due to their selfless services to humanity.
To Khalsa 1699 Watches, Vijender must have seemed like a natural fit to promote the brand as he is known both as a warrior in the ring and in his own community for the political rights of others.
The watch line has been in development for over seven months and is a fitting tribute to the
30th March 1699 when every Sikh man was blessed with the Singh name. The watch line will showcase features such as a super embossed Khanda Sahib on the crown and a caseback that features the translation of the Khalsa lion king spirit in steel with Raj Karega Khalsa over his head, with one style limited to just 5000 pieces.
Vijender has announced that his partnership with Khalsa 1699 Watches goes far beyond aesthetics alone. Vijender and Khalsa 1699 Watches are planning a global initiative to raise money for good causes with Vijender acting as the face of the fundraising campaign. After a disruptive and difficult 2020 and 2021 for many Indians, the announcement of a fundraising initiative will no doubt be well received and appreciated by many.
