Health practices that will awaken the power in every woman this Navratri

Chennai: Navratri is of great importance not only for religious traditions and rituals, but also for seeking the blessings of Goddess Durga and all her avatars. In addition to worship, prayers, and traditional dishes, it is a practice across our country to revere the womenfolk of all age groups in the form of Kumari Puja. This is done due to the belief that the divine femininity resides in each woman.

 

Respecting and honoring a woman has always been a part of our culture as women are known for striking a perfect balance between work and home. However, there are several women who often tend to neglect their own health and nutritional needs, saddled by the demands from various quarters of their lives.

 

In every woman’s lifetime, at every phase and age, integrating a positive lifestyle and wholesome components in food is very important. This is because nutritional needs of women enormously change as they grow, from childhood, teens, early adulthood to menopause and old age. Therefore, it is imperative that women should take charge of their health by following a proper diet, going for regular screenings, treatment, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and talking about their health issues with family and doctors.

 

On this festive day, lets address some common health issues in women and highlight that why they should take care of their health in a proper way:

 

  • Heart Diseases:  Several studies have indicated that CVD (heart ailments) remains the number-one threat to women’s health. With the increased consumption of processed, energy-dense food and dependence on machines for physical work, the urban population are more in danger of getting heart ailments than their rural counterparts. Moreover, symptoms of CVDs are usually not shown in a woman suffering from any heart-related issue. Hence, it is important to go for regular screening as it can help eradicate or lessen the issue in the women population at an early stage.

 

  • Cancer: Two most common cancers that affect women are breast and cervical cancer. Detecting both these cancers early is the key to keep women healthy and alive. Breast and Cervical cancers account for half a million deaths across the globe each year. The key reason to develop these cancers is neglected screening, prevention, and early detection. It is suggested that women should go for timely checkups to lower the chances of getting these cancers. Early screening and timely intervention play an important role in preventing breast and cervical cancer.

 

  • Osteoporosis: A condition that is prevalent amongst old age women and which causes bones to weakenThe bone starts falling off slowly and gradually after a certain age in women, causing their bones to break more easily. Older women are more susceptible to hip, spine, and wrist fractures or breaks in that osteoporosis. It needs special consideration to avoid the condition in the future. A balanced diet and intake of calcium-rich nutrients must be included in their daily life.

 

  • Mental Health: Mental health issues can be seen in both men and women, but evidence suggests that women are prone to experience anxiety, depression, and somatic complaints (physical symptoms that cannot be explained medically). Factors that possibly contribute to mental health include genes, hormones, and stress. Now is the time to help sensitize women to seek assistance for mental health issues. 

 

Prolonged health issues suffered by women are a result of certain inhibitions which lead to poor mental and health condition of women population:

 

  • Social Stigma: Commonly arising issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), breast cancer, and endometriosis are still subject to taboo and stereotypes in India. This resulted in a poor state of women’s health. Women diagnosed with infertility, breast cancer, and PCOS are not very confident to talk about it and it leads to a prolonged poor health condition. It is important to highlight the necessity of opening regarding these conditions and go for timely treatment.

 

  • Ignorance: It is seen in women that they ignore their health till it’s too late to address. Good health is the key to a happy and healthy life. Procrastination is also among the reasons for prolonged illness among the women population which causes poor health conditions. It is suggested that they should go for routine checkups and treatments to avoid illness.

 

  • Making other priorities: Throughout life, every woman plays various roles whether it’s a caregiver, homemaker, employee, daughter, daughter-in-law, girlfriend, companion, and a variety of others. Women somewhere lose sight of their individuality and ignore their health Women should make themselves a priority to lead a healthy and happy living life
