Thrissur: BYJU’S, the world's leading edtech company joined hands with Mr. Benny Behanan, Honourable Member of Parliament from Chalakudy Constituency, to provide free learning programs for underprivileged children. To commemorate the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi and with an aim to provide equal learning opportunities, tablets with free BYJU’S learning programs were distributed to children between the age group of 6-18, including 71 girls and 56 boys across government schools.
The partnership focuses on empowering children from underserved communities with access to high-quality digital tools and learning opportunities while strengthening BYJU’S ongoing efforts under ‘Education for All’ social initiatives umbrella. The content, including BYJU’S learning programmes for Mathematics and Science, has been made available in regional languages to provide ease of learning in one’s native language.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Benny Behanan, Member of Parliament, Chalakudy Constituency, Thrissur, said, “We are delighted to have partnered with BYJU’S and make this education drive a success. Education in India is a longstanding challenge for underprivileged children and we need to come together to resolve and ensure that every child has access to it. BYJU’S has transformed the face of education in India and widened its scope through its innovative online learning models. The content provided in the tablet is expected to create an enriching experience for the students and enable them with a strong pool of knowledge. The activity adds an impetus to our long-term vision of uplifting the underserved communities of the country.”
Speaking about the initiative, Byju Raveendran, Founder & CEO, BYJU’S, said, “At BYJU’S, our aim has been to bridge the gap between the educational and digital divide and make quality learning accessible to children even in the underserved areas. With “Education For All’ we want to continue exploring and leveraging technology to bring about positive changes in education. In the last one year, we have impacted the lives of 19 lakhs children in 26 states, across 100 districts, including remote locations. We are confident that this initiative will help make digital learning more accessible and inclusive for all students. Furthermore, our association with Mr. Benny Behanan for his noble endeavour is a significant step in that direction.”
According to a World Bank 2020 report, five months of school closures due to COVID-19 has resulted in an immediate loss of 0.6 years of schooling reducing the scope of effective learning from 7.9 years to 7.3 years. The pandemic has created the need and opportunity to improvise the education system through technology, using it as an important tool of capacity building, inclusiveness and quality learning. Access to technology is still a challenge in tribal belts, interior locations, and rural areas in India and children with minimal or nil exposure to it are affected the most.
Launched in 2020, ‘Education for All’ is BYJU’S flagship philanthropic programme, launched in 2020, to democratise education and ensure every child has an opportunity to learn. The programme is committed to empowering children in the most remote geographies and underserved communities through tech-driven learning. With a mission to empower 5 million underprivileged children by 2025, the company has partnered with 55 NGOs across 23 states to bring a positive systemic change to the education ecosystem.
