THIS WORLD HEART DAY, MUMBAI’S CSMIA ENDEAVOURS TO CONTINUE AIDING PASSENGERS WITH CARDIAC EMERGENCIES

‘Harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention and management of cardiovascular disease globally’ is the goal set for World Heart Day 2021. Heart diseases or cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been on the rise around the world due to the growth of lifestyle disorders. Passengers are often stressed while travelling through air, and to give them a sense of comfort and assurance, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has fully equipped itself with best-in-class facilities in order to aid those passengers who experience sudden Cardiac Arrest or Heart attack at the airport.

Between 2010 and 2020, the CSMIA medical team has attended over 206230 medical cases. Of these, about 2600 cases were severe medical emergencies, who were immediately shifted to near-by hospitals by CSMIA Airport ambulances. Over this period, every year about 5-6 passengers on an average with sudden Cardiac arrest were attended and successfully revived by the CSMIA medical team. However, since the beginning of the pandemic, 46 patients have taken treatment for Cardiac ailment at CSMIA. CSMIA has attended cases of cardiovascular diseases of people as young as 28 years old and as old as 95 years. The average age of passengers suffering from heart attacks or sudden cardiac arrest range from 25 years to 65 years at the airport.

Given that heart ailments are a particular type of emergency, CSMIA has a total of 117 Automated External Defibrillator (AED), making CSMIA the only airport to have largest number of AEDs as on date. An AED is a life-saving tool to treat someone having a heart attack, and therefore, it has been installed at various strategic locations of the terminal. More than 2500 CSMIA stakeholders and employees including Immigrations, CISF, Airlines, and others are trained in CPR & AED usage by conducting regular in-house AED & CPR training by CSMIA Medical Team, so that crucial life saving measures are started even before Airport Medical team arrives at the incident location. In addition to that, CSMIA currently has the highest number of medical-relief centres, with 04 medical centres and 03 first-aid centres, that any airport has in India, which are situated at key locations and are operational 24X7 for all passengers, non-passenger, and staff.

Moreover, CSMIA is also the only Indian Airport to have 07 ambulances (04 Advanced Life Support & 03 Basic life Support/Crash) available at the airport on 24x7 basis. In case of passenger experiencing heart attack (ischemia) at CSMIA, as a standard protocol, an urgent Electrocardiogram (ECG) is done to confirm presence / absence of an acute heart ischemia or rhythm disturbance leading to symptoms. At CSMIA, all Airport Medical Centers & Cardiac ambulances have ECG machines, and all doctors and nurses are trained to diagnose and start appropriate treatment of Acute Heart ischemia.

In case the passenger is travelling alone and suffers a heart attack, the medical team with the help of the Airlines & Terminal Ops staff, trace the contact details of the passenger’s family or relatives. In case there are no relatives traceable or easily available, then the Terminal Operations/Airlines accompany the passenger to the hospital along with the medical team and wait at the hospital till the passenger’s immediate contact arrives.

All the above-mentioned initiatives are a testament to CSMIA being a pioneer in providing health & safety initiatives for its passengers which gives CSMIA a reason to stand tall on this World Heart Day! These life-saving and efficient practices adopted by CSMIA not only makes it one of the most reliable airports, but also retains trust that passengers hold in CSMIA.

In case of any emergency including medical emergency, Central Emergency number 022-66850108 (Airport Contact Center) can be contacted which is manned 24x7 and can be dialed by passenger / visitor / staff for any emergency at CSMIA. Once contacted, the nearest medical team will reach the location as soon as possible.

The location of Airport Medical Centers are as follows:

  1. Terminal 1 near Staff Entry gate.
  2. Terminal 2 Level 4 Departure near Island M
  3. Terminal 2 Level 2 South West Pier
  4. Terminal 2 Level 2 South East Pier
