WORLD ART DUBAI’S INCREDIBLE ARRAY OF ARTISTS, GALLERIES AND ENTERTAINMENT UNITES LOCAL ART SCENE

WORLD ART DUBAI’S INCREDIBLE ARRAY OF ARTISTS, GALLERIES AND ENTERTAINMENT UNITES LOCAL ART SCENE

Dubai : World Art Dubai 2021, the seventh edition of the region’s most accessible and affordable art fair, is wowing visitors at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) with a number of engaging activations running alongside a collection of more than 2,000 artworks by over 250 artists and galleries.

Running until April 10 and operating under stringent health and safety measures, the show welcomed its first sale within minutes on Wednesday’s opening day as Egyptian fine artist Rania Abou Hashem - exhibiting at the show for the second time - etched her name in World Art Dubai folklore.

“I feel so lucky to have been the first to sell a piece. The feedback from visitors is that my still-life art is unique and brings the viewer happiness,” said Hashem. “World Art Dubai is a great place to meet wonderful, likeminded people, including brilliant artists. Art is an international language, and the show is a wonderful place to communicate.”

Dubai Police is showcasing a collection at World Art Dubai for the first time. Officer Ismail Bin Hamad is displaying sculptures made from wood of a Ghaf Tree and resin, with four individual pieces representing power in red, happiness in yellow, confidence in blue and peace in white.

Taking over an expanded area of the exhibition, visitors can enjoy an array of sculptures by artists including Sanuj Birla, the self-taught pop artist, and galleries Crib Decore, headed by UAE resident Armin Hosseini, and Camelson Adventures Dubai, which focused on art representing Dubai’s fun side.

“I was a visitor to World Art Dubai in 2016 where I saw an exhibitor making large origami sculptures. It really caught my eye and left me inspired so I began researching and experimenting as a hobby. After starting out by selling pieces through social media, I can’t believe I’m now exhibiting at the place where I found my first inspiration,” said Crib Decore’s Hosseini. “I create geometrical sculptures from scratch which portray natural shapes in simple flat faces, while still carrying detail in angles and overall look. The original shape is first made by recycled cardboard then strengthened from the inside with more recycled cardboard and wood, meaning my pieces are environmentally friendly, yet very strong, something I am very proud of.”

World Art Dubai is home to an activation led by Belgian artist and sculptor, Griet Van den Auwelant seeing 30 incredible female artists from across the globe collaborate to create 49 clay doll sculptures, all completely unique. Opting for 49 dolls to align with the run up to the UAE jubilee, the artwork represents the universal bond between people and aims to empower and build harmony, understanding and respect for differences.

Ultrahip Urban Art DXB is drawing attention with huge murals painted live by twelve professional, international graffiti artists including Maddy Butcher and Rabab Tantawy. Fans of the urban art movement can also enjoy a live street jam battle where artists Dozi Dreams, FINK 22, Majeed Ahmed and Culture are competing to win a free stand at World Art Dubai 2022, with the audience deciding the winner.

“We always enjoy this event not only as a chance to meet other artists and paint alongside each other, but also as a chance to exhibit our work and sell pieces that prove Street Art and Urban Art are genres which continue growing in popularity and that people want a piece of,” said Maddy Butcher, artist. “Talking to the crowd energizes us and reminds us that this is a proper movement with plenty of support in Dubai, and exciting times for all of us!”

For those keen to enjoy live displays, Sijin Gopinathan, a leading doodle artist and art activist, is completely reinventing a Mini Cooper on the show floor by covering it with world famous masterpieces including Van Gogh and Picasso.

“This is the second year I’ve visited World Art Dubai. I like the fact that there’s an event like this which showcases all types of art for a wider audience,” said visitor Jude Liqbasi. “One of the exhibition highlights for me is the diversity. There is a good mixture of world renowned and up-and-coming artists using the show to get their name out there.”

If transforming apparel is on the agenda, Artify by Craftology led by Ella Orancilla is providing makeovers to shoes, clothing and accessories with designs including baked goods, wildlife and animals.

Eco-warriors can also rejoice with a thought-provoking collaborative effort by artists Diyali Sen Bhalla and Beena Samuel. Demonstrating social responsibility, the piece is created using upcycled material including paper, plastic, cardboard, wood, fabric and metal wire. The pair describe their piece as evoking feminine energy and strength, with a balance of hard and soft material.

For those keen to enjoy live art, artist Prachi Sharma is demonstrating Rangoli Art, the traditional art form that originates from the Indian Subcontinent. Rangoli Art involves using materials like sand, rice and flower petals to create a kaleidoscope of colour. Going beyond visual art, eight-year-old Huiran is performing inspirational Chinese harmonies using the Yangqin, a chromatic instrument with a range of slightly over four octaves.

Safety First

World Art Dubai 2021 is being held under stringent safety and hygiene protocols. DWTC has proven its capability to curate the safest face-to-face environment and deliver world-class events with the highest safety protocols, as evidenced by the recent edition of Gulfood, which welcomed tens of thousands of visitors with 98% of local and international attendees recording a ‘safe’ or ‘very safe’ experience.
