Sexworker index: Where is prostition officially the most widespread?

Sexworker index: Where is prostition officially the most widespread?

Berlin: Germany is known throughout Europe for its liberal prostitution laws and has thus earned the inglorious status of “Europe's brothel”, but is that also true? The erotic platform Lust has published a study that shows where sex work is most widespread.

Where most of the red light districts can be found

Red Light District offers a relatively protected, public space in which sex work can be offered and performed: The USA tops the list of countries with the most red light districts with a total of 74 areas. Germany ranks third with 34 red light districts, surpassed by France with 35 areas.

Germany has one of the lowest rates of street prostitution

The study clearly highlights that in countries with fewer red-light districts, where sex workers cannot work in special rooms, the extent of street prostitution is higher. The countries with the highest percentage of sex workers on the street are Slovakia and France. In Germany, the proportion of street prostitution is 13 percent.

The best countries for voluntary sexwork

The presence of official brothels and red light districts enables sex workers to do their jobs more safely than is possible on the street, where the risk of violence is much higher. This also means that countries like France, Sweden and Portugal currently offer the worst conditions for doing sex work.

“Against all odds, committed sex workers make a valuable contribution every day by dealing with the physical, psychological and social needs of their customers,” says Marie Kress, Erobella's press spokeswoman. “The ideal workplace for sex workers must be self-determined, decriminalized, non-violent and stigma-free and, in the interests of the professional group, legally regulated. We want to support this and have therefore carried out this study, which shows the status quo of sex work in Europe. "
