Thiruvananthapuram: In a groundbreaking initiative, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the first International Sports Summit Kerala (ISSK), marking a pivotal moment for the state's aspirations to become a global wellness and fitness hub. The four-day summit, hosted at the Greenfield Stadium, aims to elevate Kerala's sports excellence to international standards.
Chief Minister Vijayan outlined the state's commitment to creating a comprehensive sports policy, a first in the country, emphasizing the rich sporting history and tradition of producing exceptional athletes. The new sports policy is set to revolutionize the sector through a decentralized sports planning approach, involving local self-governing bodies. The policy aims to identify regional sports needs and implement targeted projects, fostering collaboration with private entrepreneurs and start-ups in the sports sector.
The Sports Minister, V. Abdurahiman, presided over the event and highlighted the inclusive vision behind the sports policy, encompassing 17 programmes outlined in the state government's electoral manifesto. The summit also seeks to promote home sports, community sports, and women's sports, with plans for model footpaths, open gymnasiums, and swimming training centers in every panchayat.
One of the major announcements includes the collaboration between the Kerala Cricket Association and the BCCI to construct a state-of-the-art 40,000-seater international cricket stadium at Chengamanad in Kochi. This carbon-neutral sports city stadium will feature indoor and outdoor training facilities, a sports academy, research center, eco park, water sports park, sports medicine, fitness center, e-sports arena, entertainment zone, and a clubhouse. An allocation of 1200 crores has been earmarked for new stadium projects and the renovation of existing ones.
Additionally, partnerships with Meeran Group, Scoreline Sports, and the Kerala Football Association have led to an Rs 800 crore project to develop 8 stadiums and 4 football academies. The burgeoning e-sports sector in Kerala is set to receive a boost with leading e-sporting companies like NoScope Gaming and Beta Group expressing their commitment to projects worth Rs 350 crore.
The summit drew attention to the role of sports in preventing drug abuse among youth, as highlighted by Speaker A N Shamseer. Education Minister V Sivankutty announced plans to print and distribute textbooks to create awareness about the importance of sports among children from class V onwards.
The event saw the participation of key dignitaries, including Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran, MLA's like Katakampally Surendran, V. Joy, V. K. Prashanth, K. Ansalan, CK Hareendran, District Panchayat President D. Suresh Kumar, Kerala Sports Council President U. Sharafali, Chief Secretary V.
