UST brings potable water to two Kuttanad villages

Thiruvananthapuram, 16 January 2024: In a noble effort aimed at resolving the potable water shortage that has gripped Kuttanad in Alappuzha district, Kerala, the digital transformation solutions company UST has inaugurated two water treatment plants in the villages of Mithrakary and Oorukary. The non-availability of potable water had resulted in major health issues cropping among the people of many villages in Kuttanad.
The switching-on of the water treatment plants at Mithrakary and Oorukary villages, which went on stream under the aegis of the UST Kochi CSR team as part of the company’s Adopt A Village programme. The event was attended by a large beneficiary crowd from these two villages, which had been facing acute drinking water shortages. The plants were handed over to the local committees constituted in this regard.
The plants will now be the source of water for drinking, cooking, and other domestic purposes for 1000 families, comprising around 5000 people in Mithrakary, and 500 families, comprising around 2500 people in Oorukary. The UST Kochi CSR team, consisting of Prasanth Subramanian, CSR Ambassador - UST Kochi, and other CSR leads Deepa Chandran, Shine Varghese, Deepesh Chandran, and Manoj Muralidharan, were present at the inauguration. Panchayat members of Mithrakary and Oorukary villages, along with the local people, participated in the functions at the two villages. A few social workers and residents at Kuttanad, provided local support for the project.
Prasanth Subramanian, CSR Ambassador Kochi, UST, said, “The initiative has been conceived and implemented to help the local communities tide over the acute water shortage crisis they have been facing for more than a decade. The non-availability of potable water had been a major issue and had also led to health problems among the people for the community. UST is glad that the concerted efforts by its CSR team under the leadership of Sunil Balakrishnan, Chief Values Officer of UST and Smita Sharma, Global CSR head of UST have been able to find a viable solution for the problems faced by the families in the two Kuttanad villages of Mithrakary and Oorukary.” Deepa Chandran, CSR Lead, UST Kochi also addressed the gathering in the two villages.
The water treatment plants at the villages included a well, pre-filtration and chlorination tank, iron and unwanted minerals filter, Reverse Osmosis (RO) process, carbon filter, UV filter, supply tank and plant room.
The local communities that stand to benefit from the two new water treatment plants were a happy lot, as UST has found a long-lasting solution to the crisis they have been facing for a long time. According to members of the community, “we are indeed grateful for the measures adopted by UST and its CSR team to resolve the crisis situation that had been plaguing Mithrakary and Oorukary villages and the many families there.”
UST has also lined up measures to continue extending support to the communities in the two villages through health camps, providing educational support, and the like. Apart from Mithrakary and Oorukary, UST plans to extend and adopt other villages in Kuttanad as part of its CSR initiatives.
