PREMIERE OF DOCUMENTARY ‘AMONG THE FIRST INDIAN OFFICERS: THE LEGACY OF RAO BAHADUR GENERAL AMAR SINGH KANOTA’

Jaipur, 9 January To acknowledge the lasting contributions of Rao Bahadur General Amar Singh Kanota, an event was organised at Castle Kanota, near Jaipur recently by his grandson Thakur Man Singh Kanota and Thakurani Sahiba Sandhya Chundawat. The documentary, ‘Among the First Indian Officers: The Legacy of Rao Bahadur General Amar Singh Kanota’ was premiered on the occasion.

The event commenced with a brief yet captivating introduction about the distinguished Gen Amar Singh by Ms Vidushi Pal, Brigadier MS Jodha, followed by Colonel Bhawani Singh.

Talking about Gen Amar Singh’s immense passion for soldering, Vidushi Pal said that his romance of soldiering was so great that he served in 3 Armies, became one of the first Indians to be inducted in the British Indian Army as an officer and went to war as many as three times, all in different parts of the world.  He fought the boxer rebels in China where the Great Wall of China was his daily view; he fought the Germans in the freezing mud soaked trenches in France and the Turkish army in the blistering heat of the Egyptian desert in World War Iand the Afghans in the aftermath of the Third Anglo Afghan War.

Later, Brigadier MS Jodha threw light on how far-sighted and ahead of his time, Gen Amar Singh Kanota was. MS Jodha said that Gen Amar Singh was a voracious reader and read at least 60 books each year. He also played an important role in the army formation of Jaipur. One of the units was the famed ‘SMG - Sawai Man Guards’ on the lines of the Brigade of Guards. In World War II, he actively participated in Eritrea, Egypt, Palestine and Italy. He was also involved in J&K operation of 1948.

Recalling his days as an officer of the 61 Cavalry, Col Bhawani Singh said that he knew the connection of Gen Amar Singh with the Regiment, but did not fully understand the greatness of the man. The full impact of the contribution of Gen Amar Singh and the legacy he left behind dawned on me gradually. He has many firsts to his credit in regard to soldering as brought out. He used his travels to learn of the latest developments in the world and tried to implement them at Kanota, especially the agricultural practices, he said.

The introductions were followed by the documentary screening -  ‘Among the First Indian Officers: The Legacy of Rao Bahadur General Amar Singh Kanota’ that showcased the journey of life and contributions of Rao Bahadur General Amar Singh Kanota, leaving an indelible impression on the attendees.
