Hyderabad, December 6, 2023 – Enabling Child and Human Rights for Seed Companies (ECHO), a leading consortium focused on ethical supply chain standards in the seed industry, launched its new website and a comprehensive position paper on Decent Work Standards at T-Hub at a special event on Wednesday, The Position Paper was presented to Rani Kumudini, IAS, Special Principal Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana by Dr. Davuluri Venkateshwarulu, Director of GLOCAL Research and a renowned activist for Decent Work standards and the entire Executive Committee of ECHO consisting of industry leaders. More than 100 representatives of various seed companies, NGOs, multilateral organizations, Governments, and academic institutions actively participated in the event.
.Since its inception in 2019, and even before as CCP (Child Care Program), ECHO has been instrumental in developing and formalizing protocols to guide seed companies in implementing effective human rights compliance programs. This latest initiative is a testament to ECHO's commitment to enhancing stakeholder engagement and promoting sustainable practices in the seed industry. ECHO's founding member organizations - Glocal, Bayer, Syngenta, East-West Seed India, BASF Nunhems, Advanta, Seed Works, and HM Clause.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Davuluri said, "ECHO's primary objective is to ensure a sustainable seed production supply chain by safeguarding human rights and promoting decent workplace standards. Through collaboration with various stakeholders, ECHO aims to raise awareness, establish an auditing mechanism for supply chain human rights adherence, and provide sustainable solutions to farmers on child rights and other decent work issues."
About Enabling Child and Human Rights with Seed Organizations (ECHO):
ECHO is a multi-stakeholder forum established as a joint initiative between the seed industry and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Its key objective is to identify and address issues about ethical seed production supply chain practices and promote decent workplace standards in the hybrid seed industry. Originally known as the Child Labour Elimination Group (CLEG), formed in collaboration with the Association of Seed Industries (ASI) around 2003, the forum underwent further development and was officially renamed the Child Care Program (CCP). Finally, in December 2019, the organization adopted its name, Enabling Child and Human Rights with Seed Organizations (ECHO).
