Jaipur, 29 October: In the 1971 Bangladesh Operation, Lt. Gen. Sagat Singh crossed the river Meghna and captured Dacca, the then capital of East Pakistan. However, he had no orders to do so. This action of his, though it brought the swift end to the Bangladesh Operation, hugely displeased the then Chief of Army Staff, Gen. SHFJ Manekshaw and the then Army Commander of the Eastern Command, Lt. Gen. J.S. Aurora. This was disclosed by the retired Major Chandrakant Singh on the discussion of his newly released book on Lt Gen. Sagat Singh, entitled: 'SAGAT' at Ashok Club. He was in conversation with Ajay Singha.
Maj. Chandrakant Singh was in 4 guards which crossed the river Meghna and was the first regiment to enter Dacca. The operational instructions to Gen. Sagat, who was commanding 4 Corps had been to secure area, East of Meghna. In less than a week, Sagat had also handed over the reigns of the Government to the provisional Government set up in Bangladesh. The author appreciates not only the physical and moral courage of General Sagat but also his strategic vision and acumen.
The author, who was wounded in action, and won the gallantry award, Vir Chakra, also outlines the Gen. Sagat's taking over Panjim in the Goa operation of 1961 and giving a bloody nose to the Chinese in Nathula in 1967. In the last four years, the other three books published by the author are 'Cavalier in the Sky - Bio of Air Marshal Chandan Singh', 'Meghna River of Victory', and 'Roar of the Tiger - Speeches of Mujibur Rehman'
