Emergency intervention by doctors: Advanced procedure successful in 52-year-old heart patient

Thiruvananthapuram, October 16, 2023: State-of-the-art cardiac procedure successful in 52-year-old man in critical condition after a heart attack. The patient's health was restored through the ECPR procedure performed at KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum. The blockage in the coronary arteries was removed through angioplasty with the help of the ECPR (extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation) procedure, as traditional CPR was not effective in the patient who had a history of high blood pressure and diabetes.

The heart attack was caused by the accumulation of substances such as fat and cholesterol in the blood vessels, which blocked the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. Considering the severity of the patient's condition, the medical team immediately started the procedure of angioplasty. “Unfortunately, the patient suffered a cardiac arrest during the procedure, during which sixty minutes of CPR was administered. Multiple controlled electric shocks were given to the chest. Despite the continued efforts, the patient did not stabilise. Hence, the patient was put on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support for 48 hours, and the angioplasty was successfully completed, thereby improving his condition," said Dr. Ramesh Natarajan, Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiology. The patient got discharged after five days, fully recovered.

The ECMO procedure involves extracting unoxygenated blood through tubes inserted into the veins. With the help of the ECMO device, which consists of an oxygenator and a pump, oxygen is pumped into the blood, and the blood is then returned to the body through tubes connected to the major arteries which ensures necessary oxygen supply to the body parts.

The ECMO provides stable oxygenation and clearance of carbon dioxide, thus ensuring sufficient delivery of pure blood to the organs and tissues with adequate pressure. Dr. Rinett Sebastain, Consultant, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, along with Dr. Anil Radhakrishnan Pillai and Dr. Subash S, Consultants, Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, were also part of the procedure.
