Narayana Nethralaya doctors, led by its Chairman and Managing Director Dr Bhujang Shetty, took part in a flash mob event on Saturday evening on the Orion Mall lakeside to raise awareness on Glaucoma, considered a silent thief of vision leading to a condition that is irreversible. The risk of Glaucoma increases after the age of 40 years. Other common risk factors of Glaucoma include severe Myopia (near sightedness), family history of Glaucoma, injury to the eye or presence of steroids in the eye.
While usual methods of awareness campaigns like lectures, distribution of leaflets or any other public awareness methods are being carried out regularly, 50 eminent doctors and staff of Asia’s premier eyecare hospital decided to participate in a flash mob event while still adhering to the COVID-19 safety norms. The doctors danced to the viral song Jerusalema much to the delight of the visitors at Orion mall. Most of the audience were in awe, as it was very rare of doctors to take part in a flash mob to create awareness on an eye ailment.
Prior to the flash mob, the doctors took out an awareness rally from Narayana Nethralaya in Rajajinagar to Orion Mall. They held banners and placards displaying messages on the importance of getting eyes screened routinely to prevent Glaucoma. The rally and flash mob were the culmination of the World Glaucoma Week (March 7-13), a global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) organised every year to raise awareness on glaucoma.
Intense awareness on Glaucoma is necessary as it is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and in India the number of people effected by glaucoma is 11.2 million, causing permanent blindness in 1.1 million Indians. About 90% of Glaucoma is undetected in India and it is projected that nearly 111.8 million will be affected by Glaucoma in Asia.
Speaking on the high numbers, Dr Bhujang Shetty, said, “Glaucoma is an asymptomatic disease. People may not realise they have it until it reaches an advanced stage. It is a silent disease where vision drops in the last stage.” He appealed to the public to get their eyes screened even if they have do not have any visual complaints.
“We (at Narayana Nethralaya) have started research to develop artificial intelligence to screen Glaucoma to ensure that blindness due to this disease is reduced. We also have the latest investigation methods to detect Glaucoma as early as possible,” Dr Shetty added. During the World Glaucoma Week, free screening is conducted every year for patients at risk of developing the condition.
