24rd May, New Delhi: On the second leg of a 3 nation tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Papua New Guinea on Monday for the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC). At a special event organised for the occasion, PM Modi, along with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, James Marape launched the ancient Tamil text, ‘Thirukkural’ in Tok Pisin the local language of Papua New Guinea.
This ancient Tamil Text has been translated by Sasindran Muthuvel and Subha Abarna to Tok Pisin, at the special request of PM James Marape. This couple originally from Tamil Nadu, reside in Papua New Guinea and their motivation to write this book was to appreciate the rich cultural diversity in the world and also create a greater cultural connect between the people of Papua New Guinea and India. The couple also founded the PNG Tamil Valarchi Sangam, an organisation that promotes Indian culture in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, Sasindran Muthuvel is the elected Governor of the Province of West New Britain.
Beyond the Indian origin authors, the creation of this book has also been made possible through contributions of local experts on the Tok Pisin language, especially Martin Bai, a senior education advisor, capturing the essence of the original text while still maintaining an accessible and readable style in Tok Pisin.
Thus, this book ensures multilingual accessibility towards Tamil culture and traditions amongst the people of Papua New Guinea. With PM Modi quoting the ancient text in his speeches several times, the pertinence of the same is unparalleled. Given Thirukkural’s existing prevalence across the world, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the people in Papua New Guinea.
