29-year-old undergoes rare incompatible liver transplant at Trivandrum KIMSHEALTH

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20, 2023: A 29-year-old from Malappuram diagnosed with chronic liver disease underwent a rare incompatible liver transplant at KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum. A detailed evaluation conducted on the patient revealed liver failure left with no other option, but to undergo a transplant. Although the patient’s father was willing to donate his liver, a further evaluation showed that his father suffered from liver diseases contradicting transplantation. At this juncture, his wife with a non-compatible blood group (A Group) came forward asking whether she could donate her liver to save her husband. The patient was in such a critical stage that a transplant was inevitable at the earliest.

Considering the situation they were faced with which was organ shortage and criticality, the medical team led by Dr. Shabeerali T.U, Senior Consultant, Department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreas, and Liver Transplant decided to proceed with the incompatible liver transplant. A special injection was given two weeks prior to the transplant and then plasmapheresis was done to remove the antibodies in order to accept the transplanted organ.

The medical team consisting of Dr. Shiraz Rather, Dr. Sreejith S, Dr. Varghese Yeldho, Consultants, Department of Hepatobiliary, Pancreas, and Liver Transplant, Dr. Madhu Sashidharan, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, Dr. Praveen Muralidharan Transplant Director and Senior Consultant, Department of Nephrology and Dr. Satish Balan, Consultant, Department of Nephrology completed the transplant through a complex surgery which lasted for more than 14 hours. Dr. Manoj K.S, Senior Consultant, Imaging & Interventional Radiology, Dr. Hashir A, Dr. Sahil N.S, Consultant Anesthetists and Dr. Madhusudanan E.S, Associate Consultant, Critical Care were also part of the transplant.

Just after the surgery, the patient was closely monitored for the first two weeks concerning the antibody level and liver function. "Even though it was a risky case we went ahead and completed the transplant with all possible planning and standard procedures to make it a success", said Dr. Shabeerali T.U. Also, he added that the patient left the hospital hale and hearty and is back to his normal routine.
