Thiruvananthapuram, March 2, 2023: 36-year-old lady from Thiruvananthapuram who lost her right leg due to systemic sclerosis, a disease that severely affects blood vessels, was brought back to life. Her right leg was amputated months ago after suffering from this rare disease. However, when the wound in her left leg was filled with pus and it reached a situation where the left leg would have to be amputated as well, she reached KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum. Tired due to excruciating pain that even painkillers could not subside, she sought expert help. The wound was cured after four months of treatment by the medical team led by Dr. Firoz Khan, Consultant, General and Minimal Access Surgery Department.
Before visiting KIMSHEALTH, she was already undergoing treatment for systemic sclerosis over the past few years. It is a condition in which the body's immune system destroys its own cells, especially the skin and blood vessels in the internal organs, resulting in damage to the limbs and internal organs. During the examination of the patient, Dr. Rajesh .S, Senior Consultant, Department of Rheumatology and Clinical immunology found out that the patient was suffering from a condition of medium vessel vasculitis, a condition in which the blood vessels are blocked. A monthly injection including immunosuppressant medications was then started, during which the wound healed. Department of Pain Medicine, Consultant Dr. Vineetha G. Gopal's Lumbar sympathetic nerve block treatment and painkillers provided relief from the excruciating pain.
Dr. Firoz Khan said that this rare condition can be controlled only with continuous treatment and it is possible to treat and cure such diseases only through the collective effort of multidisciplinary systems such as rheumatology, surgery, pain medicine, and rehabilitation medicine
