Kochi: Wonders of marine life were unveiled before a large number of people who visited the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here on its 76th foundation day on Friday. Hundreds of people, mostly students, utilised the opportunity to have a close watch on a collection of marine flora and fauna on display at the marine biodiversity museum, various laboratories and marine aquarium of the CMFRI, and to learn about the latest research developments in marine fisheries. The exhibits also offered a platform to acquire knowledge about the secret of marine biodiversity.
Specimen of a giant-sized humphead wrasse, a reef fish weighing 35kg, was the centre of attraction at the museum, which also showcased a collection of marine species such as sea hares, flying squid, horseshoe crab, sea snakes, sea birds, pearl oyster, sea cow, sharks, penguin, dolphin, etc.
Visitors were also able to see exhibits arranged at various laboratories of the different research divisions of the institute. These include various fishes, shrimps and lobsters, giant-sized crabs, octopus, etc along with the display of information on their ecosystem. The labs also showcased marine ornamental varieties, pearls, pearl oysters, different mangrove saplings and seaweeds. Ear-rings made up of fish otoliths also drew the attention of the crowd.
An awareness session that gave insight into marine pollution and the impact of plastic pollution on the fish ecosystem was also part of the exhibition. Models of diversified mriculture practices, including cage fish farming and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) displayed.
