~ Highlights recent surgery where 10 Fibroids were removed from a 31-Year-Old Woman ~
Bengaluru, 5 January 2023: Uterine Cancer and Uterine Fibroids are among top-known risks that cause barriers to pregnancy among women. However, most women are unaware of the trauma their body is undergoing due to a lack of regular screenings and a lack of awareness about the issue. Apollo Cradle & Children’s Hospital, Bangalore, recently performed laparoscopic surgery on a 31-year-old woman, Ms. Joythi, to remove 10 fibroids of large, moderate, and small sizes.
The woman who underwent the surgery was unaware of her condition. The fibroids were detected during a routine health scan that was a part of her pregnancy planning. The scan found over ten fibroids of varied sizes ranging from 3x3 cm to 10x8cm. Fibroids, which are often misinterpreted as cancerous tumors, are non-cancerous and can easily go undetected due to their asymptomatic nature.
“Women who have Uterine fibroids often do not even realize it. On finding out, many women associate it with Uterine Cancer - primarily due to a lack of awareness about the differences between the two conditions. The two conditions have similar symptoms but early detection and treatment can remove the risks they are associated with. Fibroids are much more easily treatable as compared to cancerous tumors, through medical expertise and high-end healthcare facilities.” Dr. Aparna Jha, Sr consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist said on the case, speaking on the situation.
By nature, Uterine Cancer is a malignant tumor and Uterine fibroids are benign tumors and are equally capable of making a woman infertile and incapable of conceiving. Early detection and treatment are crucial in both cases in order to prevent infertility and provide a woman with a smooth process of conceiving. Risks of infertility due to tumors can be prevented with widespread awareness leading to early detection and treatment.
Uterine fibroids can be removed easily via laparoscopic surgery. In the case of Ms. Joythi, the surgery took nearly 4 hours to remove the 10 fibroids that covered nearly 2/3rd of her abdomen.
On this note, Dr. Aparna Jha said “I have been seeing frequent cases and complications related to fibroids. Ms. Joythi’s case was more complicated, given the size and number of the fibroids present in the uterus with minimal symptoms. The fibroids covered almost 2/3rd of the patient's abdomen adding pressure endometrial cavity and Ostia that was contributing to infertility. A surgical laparoscopic myomectomy was the only feasible option. We were confident that the surgery could be performed without any complication with the kind of expertise and amenities in the center. Post-surgical examination showed satisfying results and the patient would be able to try to conceive without any future complications in the next 10 months.”
Studies suggest that Uterine Cancer and Fibroids cases are on the rise in India, and are top health risks among women causing complications in conception. Medical Professionals recommend Routine Screening with or without noticeable symptoms in order to ensure early diagnosis and prevent any possible medical complications.
