Thiruvananthapuram, December 20, 2022: KIMSHEALTH successfully performed Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy on three patients with Achalasia Cardia. It is a condition when the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax causing difficulty in swallowing. The patients sought treatment at the Gastroenterology department of the hospital post unyielding results at various other hospitals for the condition. Dr. Madhu Sasidharan, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology diagnosed that they were suffering from Achalasia after the Oesophageal Manometry test and concluded that undergoing the POEM procedure was the best option. Manometry test involves passing a catheter with pressure sensors through the oesophagus into the stomach and measuring the pressure changes in the oesophagus.
Achalasia is a rare disease caused by the abnormal spasm and contraction of the muscles where the oesophagus meets the stomach. When food does not reach the stomach, the refluxes can destroy the cells of the oesophagus, causing life-threatening diseases like cancer and recurrent pneumonia.
POEM which utilises advanced endoscopic technology takes three to four hours to complete. A flexible endoscope tube is passed through the mouth and a small incision is made in the oesophagus thereby cutting and relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter, later it is closed using clips.
Achalasia occurs very rarely, however the number of cases has been increasing recently. Owing to this, KIMSHEALTH successfully conducted three Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in a single day. Usually drug therapy is not effective in achalasia patients. The advantage of POEM procedure is that a surgery can be avoided, it can reduce the length of hospital stay, leaving no marks or scars on the body, said Dr. Madhu Sasidharan.
He added that it is the collective effort of Senior Consultants Dr. Ajith K Nair, Dr Harish Kareem, Consultant Dr. Arun P and Consultant Anesthetist Dr Hashir A which made this feat possible. After two days of post surgery treatment, all the three patients were cured and discharged, with complete symptom relief and no complications.
