The family of a 17-year-old brain-dead boy set an example by donating his organs on Organ Donation Day

Amal Krishna from Thrissur gave a new life to people in his passing and saved multiple lives

 

Kochi, 26-11-2022: The family of a 17 -year-old boy Amal Krishna from Thrissur district pronounced brain dead from Aster Medcity gave consent to donate his liver, kidney, and corneas. Amal's organs will help four people to return back to their normal life.

Amal's liver was transplanted into a 66-year-old man from Kolanchery, who is being treated at Kochi Aster Medcity, and a kidney into a 55-year-old woman from Ernakulam. Another kidney was given to Kottayam Government Medical College and corneas to Giridhar Eye Hospital, Kochi. After the procedures, the body was handed over to the parents on the morning of the 26th.

It was as a result of headache and vomiting, Amal was admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur on November 17th  and later suffered a stroke where the left side of the brain stopped working. He was shifted to Kochi Aster Medcity in a severe critical condition on November 22nd with the hope to save his life. Amal was declared brain dead on the 25th morning. 

The parents and relatives of Amal agreed to donate his organs after Akanksha Jain, Consultant, Pediatric ICU, Aster Medicty and Dr Davidson Devasia, Senior Specialist - Pediatric Neurology, Aster Medcity discussed the importance of organ donation.

 In spite of Amal's short life on earth, his liver, kidney, and corneas will live on through four people, and by this act of kindness, Amal's parents have become messengers of posthumous organ donation. Amal, plus two student of Government Higher Secondary School Cherpu, was the only child of Vinod and Mini, native of Vallachira, Thrissur.

Dr. Mathew Jacob, Senior Consultant, Aster Medcity Integrated Liver Care Department and his team and Dr. Kishore TA, Senior Consultant, Department of Urology and his team led the organ donation surgeries.
