As the students are back in the classrooms from the virtual platforms after the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to ensure the eye health of the students who were exposed to digital tablets, computers, mobile phones, and televisions for education.
Teachers must abstain from punishing students who refuse to read what is written on the boards. It could be because students may not be able to see what is written on the board. In such cases, the teachers must understand the plight of the students and inform the parents. If the parents notice frequent migraines, inability to read text, and watery eyes in their wards, then they must ensure immediate eye care treatment for their children.
As per the research conducted by the General Education Department of the Government of Kerala, around 36% of the students were suffering from migraines, and 28% were students from eye fatigue. Therefore, eye care is paramount for ensuring the health of the eyes of the students due to overexposure to digital devices.
The dryness of the eyes will be a major problem that will be faced by the children as they forget to blink due to the continuous exposure to the digital screens and this will become a habit.
Dry eye is caused by the absence of tear film. The tear film is a thin film of tears outside the pupil. Tear film will spread on the pupil when it shines. The bubble-like tear film only lasts for 20 seconds. One has to blink to make a tear film again. People with these problems should see an ophthalmologist immediately and seek appropriate treatment.
Parents and teachers should pay special attention to the first few days of classes to see if the child has any problems such as insomnia, eye pain, eye strain, the feeling of having objects stuck in their eyes, watery eyes, sleepiness, headaches, or blinking eyes.
