Water can usage alone contributes to 1.2 lakh tonnes of plastic waste annually
From disposable plastic cutlery to single-use plastic water bottles, how much plastic waste do you think India generates annually? According to a 2019-20 report shared by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the country produced approximately 34, 69, 780 tonnes of plastic waste in the year adding to the existing non-recyclable plastic waste clogging drains and water bodies and mounting in landfills.
While the number is alarming, it is even more alarming that the per capita plastic waste generation had almost doubled when compared to the previous five years! This is despite most of the states imposing a ban on plastic carry bags and bottles. The plastic bottled water industry in India is a whopping $1.8 billion in the 1-2 litre category and $1.2 billion in the plastic water can (20 Litres) category currently and this is adding to the growing plastic waste generation in India.
Plastic bottles and caps are major contributors to plastic pollution. Let’s say you are out on a sunny day and need a glass of water. Since you don’t trust the public tap water quality, you’ll end up buying a 1-2-litre water bottle that you’ll dispose either in a garbage can nearby or at home along with the rest of your household waste (assuming you don’t litter in public areas).
What happens to the plastic water bottles you keep throwing out every now and then? They accumulate in landfills as plastic does not degrade for years! With this, you’ve already made your contribution towards the plastic pollution problem. This is the case with both, recyclable and single-use plastic, because of the inadequate government measures to curb their use.
Moving on to the 20-litre plastic water cans you use at home - a water can (20 litres) typically weighs 1 kg and lasts for about 10 cycles. This amounts to 5 gms of plastic waste per litre of water consumed which amounts to 100 gms of plastic waste per water can. By the end of the life span of a water can, it has already generated 1 kg of plastic waste!
An Indian household uses 10 water cans every month on an average. That’s equivalent to 10 cycles of a water can usage - 1 kg of plastic waste generated every month per household. Extrapolating it to the total number of households depending on water cans in the top 20 cities in India (approximately 1 crore), 10,000,000 kg or 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every month. To conclude, one water can for you is about a crore water cans in the entire country and a huge plastic waste issue for the world.
These are just two of the everyday products that contribute to plastic pollution. Why don’t we take some time out to understand the problems caused by our everyday actions and think of ways to reduce the adverse impact on the planet?
Here are three things you can easily do:
These changes will not only help you create a positive impact on the environment but also health because you’ll drink perfectly purified water and not depend on sources that provide you with water of questionable quality.
So, when do you plan to start making the changes? Let’s start now.
