Dubai, United Arabic Emirates,: As summer approaches in the UAE, the eyes have an increased exposure to sunlight and we often fall victim to the sun's harmful rays. Without proper eye care and protection, dry eyes can develop as the tear film on the eye evaporates more rapidly.
Dry Eye Disease is a condition where the eye does not produce tears properly, or when the tears are not of the correct consistency and evaporate too rapidly.
According to experts at hospital, if left untreated, this condition can lead to inflammation and pain, ulcers, scarring of the cornea, and some loss of vision. It is well known now that untreated dry eye will advance with time, so it is important not to delay the treatment. DED can affect the quality of life as it can make it difficult to perform some everyday activities, such as reading, using computer or watching TV for an extended period of time, and it can also reduce tolerance to dry environments, such as an airplane cabin.
There are many factors involved in DED, which is a chronic and progressive disease that produces a range of symptoms and can potentially lead to damaging the eyes as there may be no symptoms present in the early stages of the disease.
In later stages, patients experience stinging or burning of the eyes, feeling as if something is in the eye, episodes of excess tears following very dry eye periods, stringy discharge from the eye, pain and redness of the eye, blurred vision and eye fatigue.
According to medical research, around 40% of adults worldwide have dry eyes. However, there is evidence that suggests some people with dry eye are not even aware of their condition. For people who suffer from DED, the impact on the quality of life can be severe and it can restrict their routine daily activities as well as working lives unless they receive treatment.
Other causes of DED include hormonal changes, ageing, environmental factors, hot dry climate, excessive reading, long hours on the computer, certain medications, contact lenses, and medical conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Dry Eye Disease is common among older women, those with autoimmune diseases or other ocular or dermatological diseases such as acne rosacea , Diabetics, Patients who suffer from depression, anxiety and people who spend long hours in front of a computer screen. It also affect people with specific nutrition deficiencies or those with constant exposure to dust or air conditioning.
