DUBAI, UAE: Contenders from the UAE were crowned champions today (14 January) at the inaugural UAE National Cezve/Ibrik Championship finals and the UAE National Cup Tasters Championship, respectively, held at the first regional edition of World of Coffee Dubai 2022.
The highly-anticipated competitions concluded today and the winners of each championship will represent UAE at the international finals in Berlin, Germany.
The inaugural championships received a large number of entries from the country's finest baristas and brewers, but it was Baristas from the UAE who displayed their brilliance in latte artistry, coffee cocktail mixology, cup tasting, and Ibrik brewability, to take the coveted top spot.
Barista Mariam Erin Pinza won the UAE National Cezve/Ibrik championship. Mariam impressed the judges with her signature drink comprising elements of plumps, apricots, and berry compounds to balance the strong flavors of Ibrik.
“The Ibrik championship required creating a signature drink with elements of Ibrik as well as a traditional Ibrik. As a professional barista, I haven’t had any prior experience with Ibrik but enrolled in the competition to push my limits. I practiced for months on end to create my signature drink and I’m grateful to all my fellow colleagues who encouraged me to take part. To be able to represent the UAE on an international platform is truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see what the championship in March has in store,” said Pinza, barista at Seven Fortunes Coffee Roasters, based in Dubai.
The UAE National Cup Tasters Championship was also not without some exciting moments. Suleiman Alalawi, the first-ever Emirati brewer and founder of I’M NOT A BARISTA, a not-for-profit company with the mission to empower coffee people behind the cup, brought home the win and will be representing the UAE in Berlin in March.
On winning the championship, Alalawi said; “This is the first time I have taken part in this championship, and I can’t believe I have won. The competition was fierce and included various cup tasting sessions over eight different rounds, but I think managing to offer up three different types of coffees that set me apart. At the end of the day, it boils down to the very last bean and delivering different types of roasts. I am incredibly excited to represent the UAE at the global championship and will do my best to make my country proud.”
The first edition of World of Coffee Dubai was jointly organised by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and DXB LIVE, and the volunteer leaders of the SCA UAE Chapter and attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors and brands from six continents and 44 countries.
