Completed in September 2020, the SchlossHotel in Zermatt is a project from Studio aledolci & co. owned by architect Alessandro Dolci and based in Egna (Bolzano). The interior contractor is Concreta, the Valtellina company from Postalesio (Sondrio), with excellent know-how in the manufacturing of hotel furniture and custom solutions for contract.
Thanks to the new design interventions called SchlossHouse, SchlossSpa and SchlossSport, the SchlossHotel has strengthened its identity and expanded its offer, creating the conditions for a stay full of special moods and unique emotions.
The SchlossHouse is a new way of experiencing the hotel stay and its formula allows guests to choose solutions with a variable geometry. Built between 2018 and 2020, without the main structure of the hotel having undergone a period of closure, it extends over four floors, two above ground and two underground.
The design of the facades and interiors are the work of Studio aledolci & co. and maintain a constant dialogue with the main hotel building. Alongside a special level of privacy, what makes the SchlossHouse unique is the high flexibility that characterizes the layout of the interiors. The two floors of the villa house one apartment per floor and are configured in such a way as to make it possible to create various space compositions according to the specific needs of guests.
Each apartment consists of a large living area with kitchen and three bedrooms, which can be used by large families or groups of friends. The rooms - in double or single configuration - are served by three bathrooms with a high level of comfort.
THE SPA HEART OF THE PROJECT
Although a continuation of the main building, the SchlossHouse is at the same time an aesthetic reinterpretation of its own, which offers guests all the pleasure of a warm welcome with a sober elegance far from a predictable alpine style.
The spa is the main actor of this structure and, in a certain sense, the generative element of the entire building, being separated from the hotel but connected by a physical and aesthetic path. Completed by a 50 square meter yoga room and a 150 square meter gym, the spa covers 350 square meters and is designed by the studio aledolci & co., highly specialized in this type of environment, which requires an uncommon mix of technical skills. and creative flair to achieve excellent results in a context of complex factors such as water management, plant engineering and lack of light.
It is no coincidence that architect Dolci, owner of the studio, is an enthusiastic user of these spaces, which combine pleasure and health. His experience as a spa user translates into the ability to create structures of uncommon suggestion and beauty, which are at the same time fine working tools for relaxation and well-being.
"We started the collaboration with the owners of the SchlossHotel with the spa project - says the architect - From here, we also followed that of the gym, the yoga room and the six rooms. Basically, starting with the spa, we came to design the entire SchlossHouse building, taking care of the roof sheets and the lighting system. In all this, the role of Concreta was fundamental and, as always, Concreta is an ideal partner for 'translating' the project into materials and structures."
LIGHT AND THE ROLE OF THE CAVITY
The fundamental problem, but also the solution that led to the great livability of the spa, was that of light. "If a spa space can be artificially illuminated in the evening and at night, it is essential - to avoid an alienation effect with unpleasant influences also on the human metabolism - that the spa can benefit from natural light during the day", explains the architect.
The solution adopted by the design studio has brilliantly exploited one side of the perimeter of the basement, which for about 30% takes light from a cavity. This space made it possible to take advantage of the natural light that pours from a crack, thanks to which the light cuts through the space, so that the light is perceived but not its source.
The sauna is positioned towards the outside and the ice-room gives access to this outdoor space, whose decoration is entrusted to the wallpaper and the effects generated by the light on the decoration. The possibilities offered by wallpaper and digital printing on stoneware have given rise to a game between natural and semi-natural light, which has allowed the spa to 'open' to the outside.
The relaxation and deep-relaxation or lounge area has been managed with a filter of glass and wood elements that allow to use it as a relaxation area and as a conversation space. Wood is obviously present in the spa in a mix with other powerful materials such as aluminum, glass and concrete. The knowledge of materials owned by Concreta allowed to combine the elegance and comfort of the spaces with solidity, hygiene and ease of maintenance.
The reception acts as a link with the basic structure. The walls are in wood paneling and the surfaces in stoneware with sandstone or marble finishes. The structures in wood and glass create, even in this space, a sensation of viewless that moves the volumes and cancels the rigidity of continuous walls, aided in this by the presence of a multitude of mirrors that create a further spatial effect.
Another connecting element between the hotel and the SchlossHouse is a colourful area, a kind of 'play room’ in which a large window opens to the outside and where a large colourful table gives a touch of joy to the environment and connotes it with a pleasant mood.
