Jaipur: The Managing Director of The Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), Mr. Pravir Krishna today shared his experiences of working in the tribal areas and discussed the inspiration and objectives of his recently launched book titled, “Tryst with the Tribes: Tales from Tribal Heartlands” .The author was in conversation with Ms. Mugdha Sinha, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Rajasthan. The event was live-streamed on the Facebook Page of the IAS Literary Society.
The author described this book as a labour of love, documenting memories of over a decade of serving in tribal areas across the country and working towards tribal welfare and development. He also discussed the evolution of the landmark ‘Imli Andolan’ of Chattisgarh in 1997. Among several anecdotes from his service and tribal experiences, the author shared how one of his routine inspection visits as the Collector of Bastar turned into an entrepreneurial movement when he shifted the conversation with the tribes from the mundane to production of tamarind in the area.
During the conversation, Mr. Krishna spoke about his love and reverence for the symbiotic relationship between the forest and the tribes. He further affirmed that development for tribes must be understood and undertaken from a perspective that is relevant to them and retains their skills and resources while enhancing their knowledge and entrepreneurial skills. It should be aimed at providing them the means to lead a life of quality and respect. He said the tribal folk are extremely skillful and hardworking but lacked the ability to market themselves, a lacuna that he and his team endeavour to fill.
The author further stated that tribes deserve recognition and ownership rights of their products on a global scale and mentioned the government’s efforts to acquire Geographical Indication (GI) status for them.
Mr. Krishna also congratulated the Rajasthan Administration for setting up 500 'Van Dhan' Units across the state for the welfare of Rajasthani tribe
