Revolutionize digital communications systems and bridge digital divide to meet $5 trillion economy goal: Industry leaders at India Mobile Congress 2021

New Delhi: There is a need to revolutionize digital communications systems of the country and build a reliable infrastructure which can bridge the digital divide was the central theme for India Mobile Congress 2021 on the last day of the event. This year India Mobile Congress (IMC), a three-day event was jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), intended to deliver one of the largest digital technology events in Asia. 

 

The event had several entrepreneurs, innovators, operators, technologists, CXO’s globally, along with government officials in a unique environment, to discuss, showcase and conduct business on a global scale. Some of the other important dignitaries who participated in the event are Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Railway; Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications; Shri K Rajaraman, Secretary (T); Bharti Enterprises chairman Shri Sunil Mittal; Aditya Birla Group chairman Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla; Reliance Industries Chairman Shri Mukesh Ambani; Lt. Gen. Dr. SP Kochhar, Director General, COAI; Mr. Nunzio Mirtillo, Ericsson; Mr. Yezdi Nagporewalla, KPMG; Mr. Nick McKeown Intel; Mr. Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA; Mr. Nishant Batra, Nokia and Mr. Ankit Agarwal MD STL.

 

Dr. PD Vaghela (IAS) Chairman in his session highlighted, “Telecom connectivity is changing the landscape and leading towards the sophisticated world. India is the world's second-largest telecommunication market with a telecom subscriber base of 1200 million and with a tele density of 88% and an internet subscriber base of 183 million. India is poised to introduce 5G with a preparation made by the Govt & various initiatives taken by TRAI”.

 

Shri K Rajaraman (IAS), Chairman DCC & Secretary (T), Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communication, Government of India, said, “In order to reach the $5 Trillion economies in the next 5 years, we need to revolutionize our digital communications systems. 5G will unlock a lot of innovation in the economy, with the low latency and high bandwidth that it offers. It will also bring in a lot of use cases that will specifically solve the nation's problems, in order to solve issues prevalent in the nation, the Government of India is enabling technology drives and hackathons to bring in innovation customized to India. The Government has launched various schemes such as de-licensing and reducing the compliance burden on the operators.”

 

“We have one of the largest integrated grids running at the common frequency in such a large country and such a large load. Also, we had successfully implemented the Saubhagya scheme which strengthened the backbone supply infrastructure through Deendayal Upadhyay gram Jyoti yojna and IPDS scheme in the Urban areas. As we are facing some difficulties with the network connectivity, there are delays & omissions in the data communication causing difficulties for the system operators to run the show. So one of the key areas is for the delegates, to make the strategy for the reliable mobile data network in the country. Achieving reliability will boost India's journey for the second-generation transformation of the power sector,” said Shri Alok Kumar (IAS), Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India

 

Abhishek Singh, President & CEO National E-Governance Division NEGD Department of Electronics and Information Technology, said, “Inclusion has been one of the most important focus areas of government since the inception of Digital India and digital Governance. Also, in order to ensure that we do not create digital divide projects like Common Service Centers (CSC) were launched, and over a period of time these have become very vibrant services and now CSCs are also offering such as telemedicine and digital education services.”

 

“We need to ensure digital services are offered to every individual in the country and connectivity is the only medium for this. The current connectivity plan laid is to connect 600,000 villages in the country in the next three years out of which 200,000 villages have already been connected.”, he further added.

 

India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2021 hosted 42 keynotes, 12 fireside chats, and 21 Panel discussions. Some of the important topics discussed were 5G and Roadmap for its Implementation such as policies, regulations, and Standards. Additionally, there were fruitful discussions on the role of technology to speed up the digital inclusion to the bottom of the pyramid, connecting the under-connected society, developing new regulatory frameworks for digital technologies,  bringing Indian manufacturing companies to the forefront with PLI support, industry, and Government support to start-ups and drive innovation, ease of doing business to overcome the impediments for expansion of telecom networks and many more technical thought leadership topics.
