Tournament favorite India Oil drubs home team SCR by 6-4, at the 'Gooncha 57th Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament’!

Hyderabad: The tournament favourite Indian Oil beat the local team SCR by 6-4 in the first match on the eighth day of the ‘Gooncha 57th Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament’, being hosted at the SCR Sports Complex, Secunderabad. Olympians studded Indian Oil with this victory topped Pool ‘A’ and have earned entry into the Semi-finals beginning tomorrow, they will meet the Runner up from the Pool ‘B’. In earlier league matches Indian Oil beat Army XI by 4-1 and had a goal less draw with PNB. While the home team SCR, which qualified from the knock out round to play against the seeded teams, lost to PNB by 2-4 and beat Army XI by 3-2, in the league stage. This match was one of the most exciting matches with the home team giving a tough fight and not offering the match on a platter to Indian Oil. Though penalty corners were missed in plenty, Indian Oil finally exerted pressure and exhibited its superiority to win the game 6-4. SCR’s campaign in the tournament ends with this defeat.  

 

Indian Oil team with Olympians in its ranks created several penalty corner opportunities and earned 4 of its 6 goals through penalty corners. Olympian Raghunaath VR converted 3 of the 4 penalty corners. Roshan Minz gave Indian Oil lead in the 2nd minute through a field goal, but SCR’s Lovepreet Singh equalled the score in the 12 minute with a field goal. In the 19th minute Raghunaath VR converted a penalty corner and put Indian Oil ahead, but SCR Captain G Poonacha equalled the score with a field goal in the 23rd minute. Belsajar Horo through a field goal gave the lead to SCR, in the 29th minute, immediately Indian Oil’s Raghunaath VR’s converted a penalty corner in 30th minute and ensured levelling of scores at halftime.

 

In the second half SCR lost steam and gave away the initiative to Indian Oil, who scored three goals to firmly remain in contention for Semi-final berth. A penalty corner each was converted by Affan Yusuf in 44th minute and Raghunaath VR in the 54th min for Indian Oil. SCR’s MG Poonacha reduced the margin through a field goal in the 51st minute, but Talwinder Singh scored a field goal in the dying moments of the match and paved the way for a magnificent 6-4 win for Indian Oil. Raghunaath VR of Indian Oil was declared the Man of the match.

Game – 2: CAG XI vs Indian Navy

 

Despite CAG XI taking the wind out of Indian Navy’s sail with 6-2 win; Indian Navy qualifies for Semis at the 'Gooncha 57th Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament’!

 

 Hyderabad : CAG XI scored a big win over Indian Navy in their final league match in Pool B  at the ‘Gooncha 57th Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament’, being hosted at the SCR Sports Complex, Secunderabad. CAG XI earlier lost both their matches in the league stage to Indian Railways 2-1 and to PSB by 1-0. Indian Navy beat PSG by 1-0 and drew with Indian Railways 2-2 in the earlier league matches. CAG XI playing more for retrieving their prestige displayed some high standard hockey, while Indian Navy played an insipid game. Indian Navy after their last match with 4 points gained being in the second spot in the Pool, has qualified for the Semi-finals.

 

Imran Khan gave the lead for CAG XI in the 12th minute through a field goal and Chandan Singh added to it in the 24th minute by converting a penalty corner. CAG XI led by 2-0 at halftime with Indian Navy remaining goalless. In the second half CAG XI increased their lead to 3-0 with a field goal by Imran Khan in the 40th minute. Indian Navy’s Jugraj Singh reduced the margin by converting a penalty corner in the  46th minute, but immediately Naeemuddin Mohammed increased the lead for CAG XI with a field goal in the  47th minute. CAG XI’s Manikanta Venkateshwarlu made it 5-1 with a field goal in the 52nd minute and Satish Yadav added to it a field goal in the 55th minute field goal. In the dying moments of the match Jugraj Singh converted another penalty corner for Indian Navy and reduced the margin to 6-2. Naeemuddin Mohammed of CAG XI was named the Man of the match.

Semi Finals Line Up

 

Indian Oil with 7 points and PNB with 5 points ranked 1 and 2 respectively have qualified for semi-finals from Pool ‘A’ and Indian Railways with 7 points and Indian Navy with 4 points qualified for Semis from Pool ‘B’. SCR with 3 point and Army XI  with 1 point in Pool ‘A’ and CAG XI with 3 points and PSB with 3 points in Pool ‘B’ are out of the tournament.

 

In tomorrow’s semi-final matches, winner of Pool ‘A’ India Oil will take on Pool ’B’ runner Indian Navy in the first match a 1.00 pm and the winner of the Pool ‘B’ Indian Railways will take on PNB runner from Pool ‘A’ at 3.00 pm.

About Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society

This Society was incorporated in the fond memory of Independent India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to promote the ecstatic National Game of Hockey. Ever since, no stone was left unturned to take it to a superior league. Gaining appreciation from various quarters. In the years to come the tournament was to be graced by Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers and Union Cabinet Ministers of India. The Nehru Cup matches have keenly been looked forward to and it has been an honour for any hockey team to win the coveted Nehru Gold Cup.

 

With every passing year, the JNHT Society garnered more attention and attracted new participation. The all- time greats such as Dhanraj Pillay, Pargat Singh, Zafar Iqbal, Ajit Pal Singh and many more have played in the tournament. The exposure given to hockey players by the JNHT Society Tournaments has allowed many of them to go onto the Indian National Hockey Team, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. This includes the recent bronze victory of the Indian National Hockey Team’s Captain, Manpreet Singh who played the Junior and Senior Nehru Hockey Tournaments before getting into the Indian National Hockey Team.
