RAJASTHAN MINISTER OF ART & CULTURE INAUGURATES ‘SUSTAIN BY CARTIST’ EXHIBITION AT JKK

Jaipur: Old cars that have become scrap and would otherwise be disposed have been fully utilised by Cartist to create this wonderful ‘Sustain by Cartist’ exhibition. Each and every part of a car like the tyres, grill, hood, seats, etc. of different cars have been used to create upcycled furniture and décor items. These scrap parts have been used to create art pieces that will inspire new artists to use such material that would otherwise be thrown away to create a stunning art form. ‘Sustain by Cartist’ initiative will travel to 33 districts of Rajasthan for one month. Working together with local artisans, workshops and exhibitions will be organised in all the districts. This initiative will go a long way in creating awareness for sustainability, recycling and upcycling in the face of climate change. This was stated by Minister of Art and Culture, Government of Rajasthan, Dr B.D. Kalla. He inaugurated the ‘Sustain by Cartist’ Art Exhibition at the Alankar Gallery in JKK today. Also present on the occasion were -- Director General, JKK, Ms Mugdha Sinha; Additional Director General (Admin.), JKK, Dr Anuradha Gogiya and Founder, Cartist, Mr Himanshu Jangid.

‘Sustain by Cartist’ is a 9-day exhibition being organised by Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) in collaboration with Cartist. It is an initiative to promote upcycling of auto parts and curating designer furniture through utilizing old car parts and automotive waste. The exhibition will be on till 12 September.

Ms. Mugdha Sinha said that Jawahar Kala Kendra is very pleased that ‘Sustain by Cartist’ exhibition is being showcased in its premises. This initiative comes rightly at a time when climate issues like floods and rising temperatures are cropping up and society is looking for means to preserve our resources and conserve the Earth. This exhibition is a unique display of creating wealth from waste with value addition to create art and décor. People need to be made aware to buy only what they need and recycle to protect the environment.

Founder, Cartist, Mr Himanshu Jangid said that climate change is a burning issue in the world. Around 20 million cars are scrap and there is no way to know where these old cars can be taken and disposed. ‘Sustain by Cartist’ is a solution to this issue by Cartist. Local artists and their talented craftsmanship has been incorporated to create these stunning art pieces and also provide them with employment opportunities

Sustain by Cartist Art Exhibition

Upcycling is one of the most significant ways one can lower their impact on planet earth, whether one is buying clothes, home items or even home furniture. This endeavour - Sustain by Cartist a solution initiative to create upcycle old cars into furniture also incorporating artists and craftsmen and dying arts of India. All curated furniture made by upcycled auto parts have been assigned a unique Indian name to connect with our culture. The idea is to help people easily adopt a sustainable way of living. Here are some for reference: ‘Stambh’ means 'pillar' that stands upright in its glory. Side table is handcrafted from crankshaft, flywheel, wood plank and incorporates miniature art form. ‘Chowki’ means a low seat or stool, staple utility seating used in traditional Indian households. The seat is upcycled by using shocks absorber and hand weaving by local artisans. ‘Gaddi’ symbolized the throne, a royal affair of seating of kings and Queen. Chair is handcrafted from pillars of car and gold leafing work is done by craftsmen.
