Calicut, February 05, 2024: A 60-year-old woman from Orkkatteri, facing severe breathing difficulties, was swiftly diagnosed with a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and rescued from the brink of death at Calicut Aster MIMS. Premini, the patient, encountered distress while on her routine morning walk, prompting her visit to a nearby clinic initially. However, with symptoms not subsiding, she sought further medical attention at Aster MIMS three days later.
Upon admission, tests revealed critically low oxygen levels in Premini's blood, along with damage to the right side of her heart evident in an echocardiogram. With urgency, doctors proceeded with an angiogram and employed an innovative interventional therapy. Through thrombus aspiration, they successfully removed the blood clots obstructing pulmonary blood flow, swiftly restoring normal heart function. This cutting-edge treatment, not widely practiced in India, has been mastered by the cardiology department at Aster MIMS, offering a promising path for patients in Kerala.
Pulmonary embolism, a condition wherein blood clots travel to the lungs' arteries, poses an immediate threat, with up to 20 percent of patients succumbing to lack of breath if left untreated. Dr. Sandeep Mohanan, Senior Consultant in Interventional Cardiology at Aster MIMS, emphasized the critical role of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention in Premini's miraculous recovery. “This advancement was not only a boon for pulmonary embolism patients but also a potential game-changer in Kerala's healthcare landscape,”. He added.
