Great Place To Work India Reveals Striking Gender Diversity in NGOs, Surpassing Other Industries by 24%

[Mumbai, October 6, 2023] — Great Place To Work® India is proud to announce the release of India’s Best NGOs To Work For 2023. This prestigious ranking applauds organizations that have not only demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and empowering work environment for all. The comprehensive study brings to light several key insights, including the remarkable gender diversity within NGOs, with 45% of the workforce being females, which is 24% higher than the other industries. This social commitment is strategically aligned with a substantial economic impact, projected to constitute 2% of the nation's GDP

The report estimates 80% NGOs in India primarily focus their efforts on promoting Quality Education, ensuring Good Health and Well-being, and working towards eradicating Poverty. The survey highlighted on average NGOs work across 13 locations, with 323 individuals and 97% of them working full time. The report highlights distribution of NPOs according to NGO Darpan Portal, i.e., Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have the highest number of NGOs in India with 15% and 14% respectively, followed by Delhi at 8% and West Bengal at 7% among others.

Speaking of the announcement, Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, CEO, Great Place To Work® India said, “I am thrilled to congratulate all the winners of India's Best NGOs to Work For 2023. At Great Place To Work, our core belief is that every workplace should be a great place to work for all, and it's a vision that resonates deeply with all of us. Our unwavering commitment to the For All™ philosophy, which encompasses equity of representation, compensation, opportunity, and well-being for all individuals, continues to drive us in all our endeavors.”

Emphasizing on the important aspects of the report, she said, “I would like to shine a spotlight on the invaluable role played by the NGO/NPO sector in the holistic growth of India. Over the years, we've witnessed incredible achievements in initiatives like Polio eradication and the Aanganwadi initiative by the Government of India, which have positively impacted the lives of millions. These milestones, alongside regulatory reforms, have created an environment where the sector is poised to contribute 2% of the GDP, according to India's Million Missions, Nonprofit Sector Report.”

She also said, “Since 2015, Great Place To Work India has embarked on a journey to recognize and celebrate excellence within the NGO and NPO sectors. Our Great Place To Work Certified™ community has collaborated to conduct one of India's most extensive studies of NGOs and NPOs, engaging with over 490 organizations over these years. We are proud to fund this study entirely and provide a detailed feedback report to all participating NGOs. What truly sets this study apart is not only the recognition of the best workplaces within the NGO sector but also the remarkable impact your partnership with us is making on society. All organizations that nominate themselves for the Best Workplaces in NGOs undergo a rigorous assessment. This year alone, we considered approximately 29,000+ employee voices from 91 NGOs headquartered across 20+ cities in India for this study.”

Appreciating the efforts of the NGOs, she said, “According to our India's Best NGOs to Work For 2023 report, the landscape of career choices among Millennials and Gen Z is rapidly evolving, with an increasing preference for NGO and NPO careers over traditional corporate roles. According to our recent report, "Working For Good" versus "Working For Profit" offers at-par workplace experience, with employees in Non-Profit and Charity Organizations responding just as well as those in other industries.

An overwhelming 94% of employees in our NGO study feel good about the ways they contribute to society. Your well-deserved recognition today is a testament to your unwavering dedication. It is a privilege to have partnered with your organization on your journey to nurture a High-Trust, High-Performance culture. Your commitment to making the world a better place through your work is truly commendable, and we wholeheartedly celebrate your remarkable achievement. Once again, congratulations on this outstanding recognition, and here's to the continued success and positive impact you bring to the world.”

Although challenges like stricter foreign fund monitoring and reduced savings are faced, the best workplaces in NGOs show remarkable agility and adaptability towards this. Great Place To Work suggests increased corporate support in local fundraising and highlights the importance of strategic resource planning and talent retention for NGOs. Their index reflects employee sentiment and organizational effectiveness, emphasizing NGOs' workplace culture experience is at par with other industries. An impressive 94% of NGO employees express deep satisfaction with their organizations' societal contributions. The unveiling of India’s Best NGOs To Work For 2023 celebrates achievements and sets a benchmark for positive workplace culture and social impact.
