MONSOONS AND NON-COVID DISEASES. HOW TO AVOID THEM?

MONSOONS AND NON-COVID DISEASES. HOW TO AVOID THEM?

The sweltering Indian summer is bound to leave one parched, thirsty for relief, rains. The sunny days in India are often accompanied by humidity, sweaty sleepless nights in the absence of an air conditioner, and weariness due to dehydration for many. So now, when the first raindrop of monsoon touches the surface of the earth, it is a celebration.

Unique to the tropical country of India, the monsoon season brings greenery and lusciousness to nature. This is the time when flora and fauna thrive, especially in forest areas. Moreover, the season with its heavy rain is hugely beneficial to a farmer’s lifestyle whose primary source of income is agriculture.

The rainy season in India is when different communities celebrate their harvest to seek blessings from God. One such important festival is Behdienkhlam, an annual cleansing ritual observed in July in Meghalaya, home to the heaviest rainfall in India. The literal translation of the name is ‘chasing away the demon of cholera.’

That brings us to the fact, monsoon with its charm and aura, also brings a tonne of diseases, even infectious ones. Hence, it is highly recommended to stay cautious and enjoy the beauty of the rains. Prevention is better than cure, after all.

Below are a few diseases that affect human beings during the wet season and ways to stay on top of your immunity.

Food and water-borne diseases: Eating freshly cooked home food is the best to stay healthy. Drinking boiled or purified water is essential. Don’t forget to wash your hands frequently.

Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and diarrohoea are common if proper hygiene is not maintained. Drinking contaminated water and junk food prepared in unclean conditions can also affect your body. Stomach related issues & fever and in some cases of Hepatitis A, acute liver failure are severe effects of not being preventive in this season.

Malaria and Dengue: Due to heavy rains, water gets accumulated in different areas, becoming stagnant over time. This acts as the perfect breeding spot for mosquitoes which invites diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya. Dengue reduces your blood platelet count, which can turn fatal if not prevented in time.

Mosquito repellants, nets are one way to avoid the insect and shutting doors, windows before evening to keep them at bay. Empty your plant pots, and don’t let water get collected in your house.

Common Flu and viral fever: These air-transmitted diseases are common throughout the year. However, during monsoons, there is a rapid increase. Due to the higher moisture content in the air, micro-organisms get a suitable environment to grow, resulting in more infections. Some of the symptoms include fever, sore throat, runny nose, watery eyes.

  • No matter how romantic the idea of letting go and getting drenched in the rain seems, it is only wise not to do that
  • Use rain protection gear like umbrellas, raincoats when stepping out. Try not to walk in dirty water puddles to prevent bacterial, viral infection. Always keep a change of socks, shoes, clothes
  • Take a hot shower when you return home on a rainy day to eliminate germs

Eating healthy is important. As mentioned previously, consuming fresh and hygienic food is necessary to avoid many diseases. Have 'Seasonal Fruits' like apples, jamuns, litchi, plums, cherries, peaches, papayas, pears and pomegranates that are some of the best supplements to your diet in rainy season to improve your immune system. In addition, go for healthy & nourishing soups, replace fried snacks with baked light bytes like bhuttas, dimsums, sprouts bhel - this can help avoid bloating. Rejuvenate your body by drinking herbal tea with lemon, honey and tonics made up of ginger, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, tulsi, etc.

With all of this, we also need to remember Covid-19 is still persisting. Many experts and epidemiologists suggest that there might be a spike in the number of cases during the rainy season. Hence, ensure you avoid stepping out unless absiolutely necessary. Eat healthy and increase your immunity. Exercise and mediate to keep your mental & physical health in check. Get a full body check up ASAP to ensure you have taken all the measures to prirotise your health.

This monsoon keep your activities limited to your home and stay healthy. Prevention is the key to healthy life.
