Breaking up because of family reasons is an inherently Indian topic that is experienced by every household. People have either broken out of relationships or never gotten into them in the first place due to their families. It is unspoken knowledge that relationships will lead to issues and misunderstandings at home, no matter which part of the country you are from.
Tanvi Rajgharia, aka Jhansi, is known to bring to stage themes that every Indian can relate to, and her latest song is specifically tailored for the screen based on a very Indian concept of breaking up due to family reasons. The concept revolves around a room full of Indian people explaining what it is to a clueless, white-skinned person sitting in a restaurant. Collaborating with some great young talents like Priyanka Banerjee and Shohini Dutta, “We break up because of family reasons” is a mega broadway style song shot in a western format. Priyanka has previously helmed Devi, starring stalwarts like Kajol, Shruti Hassan, Neha Dhupia, and Neena Kulkarni. On the other hand, Shohini is the VP of The Danceworx and has previously worked with big names like Imtiaz Ali.
Moving from Kolkata to Bombay, getting together a team of 25 artists and rehearsing day and night, Jhansi calls the whole experience of shooting this song “absolutely surreal.” She opted to shoot this song instead of performing it live to better reach her audience.
In India, where musical theatre is still in its nascent stage, Jhansi has sweepingly taken it to a large scale by introducing Broadway style musical theatre into the daily lives and entertainment of Indians, with live singing, original scripts, versatile performances, and real issues. From performing solo to now having large groups perform alongside her to her scripts, she has come a long way. She has worked with various storytelling communities for years now, narrating and conveying Indian stories that people of any and all ages can relate to. She believes in narrating everyday issues that people face in a musical format to connect with people.
Living life “The Jhansi Way,” which also happens to be her Instagram handle, she has also been a part of Queens of Comedy, which aired on TLC, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. The Lasalle College of Arts alumni has been on a roll with her musical “Terrified of Twenty-Five” along with this, and is now the first Indian to be invited to be a part of the renowned BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in NYC as a lyricist.
