Hyderabad:  A virtual event titled Peace & Harmony through Yoga & Ikebana was presented by First Master Ohryu Rekha. The Guests of Honour were Honourable Mr. Taga Masayuki, Consul General of Japan Chennai, and Yogacharya Shashidhar, International Yoga Guru.

Speaking about the event, the Convenor of the event, First Master Ohryu Rekha Reddy, said, “‘The theme – Yoga & Ikebana is a celebration of two schools of thought that have many things in common. Yoga promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. This ancient Indian science and its benefits is unparalleled. It has spread and is valued all over the world for its benefits.

The practice of Ikebana leads us closer to nature. This sublime art form infuses spirituality and connects India as the Buddhist monks were the first to practice it, and Buddhism originated in India, spreading to Japan. In these times of the pandemic, we wanted to highlight the importance of taking care of our well-being both mental and physical. Today, in our demonstration, we represented nine asanas in the form of Ikebana floral creations, from simple Padmasana to more advanced Mayurasana. It is nice to showcase and create an understanding of different cultures form countries far and wide.”

Ikebana demonstrations by Ohryu Rekha Reddy and her senior students Associate First Master Sharmila Agarwal, and Third Master Deepti Yajnik were the program’s highlights.

The Consul General appreciated the programme and was happy to see the efforts in spreading Ikebana and connecting it with yoga. Yogacharya Shashidhar, an International yoga guru and pranic healer, gave a wonderful insight into yoga. Yoga Master Sai Cholleti from Germany was also present and spoke of the acceptance of yoga in other countries.

Rekha Reddy has been practising Ikebana for 35 years and teaching for more than 25 years. Many of her students are teachers now. She studied Ikebana under Grandmaster Horyu Meena Anantanarayan & Shamala Y.R Reddy. She has given demonstrations & workshops all over the world and authored an art book -- 'Petals & Palette'--an Ikebana book with M F Husain's paintings. She conceptualized 'Flowers & Flavours'- for the Ikebana International Hyderabad Chapter and other publications involving the participation of several Ikebana enthusiasts. One such was ‘Blooms & Looms’ by a group of 55 Ikebana artists juxtaposing Ikebana flower arrangements with saris, handloom & colour of unrivalled Indian textiles.
